Subject: Recognizing Oakland Roots Sports Club
Colleagues on the Council:
This Resolution recognizes the Oakland Roots Sports Club for its many contributions to the City of Oakland since its founding in 2018. The Oakland Roots have demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the City, through their chosen name, and their many community outreach efforts, and their philanthropic investments. While other professional sports teams have taken advantage of our unique Oakland culture and fan loyalty to bolster their reputation and increase their profits, with minimal commitments toward community benefits, the Oakland Roots have shown that they are dedicated to our residents through their volunteer and social justice efforts. I had the privilege and honor to play alongside Oakland Roots players as an honorary member of the team last year and was impressed by the athleticism, professionalism, and community commitment of team members. In addition to bringing professional soccer to Oakland, the organization supports several youth organizations in the City. The Oakland Roots’ recent recognition and support of 14-year-old national weightlifting champion, Seth Evans to pursue his Olympic dreams is the latest example of their positive impact on Oakland youth.
I, respectfully request your support of this Resolution to acknowledge the Oakland Roots Sports Club for its commendable work in the City of Oakland.
