RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CELEBRATION OF RAMADAN,
PASSOVER, AND EASTER IN THE MONTH OF APRIL 2022
WHEREAS, the City of Oakland is home to a diverse population of more than 440,000 people from all around the world with different cultures, nationalities, ethnicities , and religious backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, the City of Oakland acknowledges and respects the many faith traditions of Oakland residents, including the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian faiths; and
WHEREAS, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, o bserved by over 1,800,000,000 Muslims worldwide and is considered a time of increased w orship, spiritual cleansing and good deeds and acts of charity; and
WHEREAS, according to Islamic tradition, Prophet Muhammad received the revelation of the Holy Quran, the central religious text in Islam believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God, during the month of Ramadan; and
WHEREAS, the Holy month of Ramadan commences on April 2, 2022 and ends on May 2, 2022; and
WHEREAS, Passover is a Jewish holiday commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt over 3,000 years ago, which occurs on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan; and
WHEREAS, Passover is often c elebrated with a ceremony where the Seder, a special family meal with foods of symbolic significance, is eaten along with the performance of special prayers and traditional recitations; and
WHEREAS, Passover commences on April 15, 2022 and ends on April 23, 2022; and
WHEREAS, according to Christian tradition, Easter is the most important holiday in the Church marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death by crucifixion; and
WHEREAS, Christians around the world celebrate Easter as it represents the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament and the revelation of God’s salvific plan for all Christians; and

WHEREAS, Easter is celebrated on April 17, 2022; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That the City of Oakland recognizes the various religious holidays occurring during the month of April 2022, including the celebration of Ramadan, Passover, and Easter.
