RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THE CITY ATTORNEY
TO COMPROMISE AND SETTLE THE CLAIM OF SARAI CRAIN, CITY ATTORNEY’S FILE NO. 35148, IN THE AMOUNT OF TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS AND ZERO CENTS ($268,000.00) (DEPARTMENT OF VIOLENCE PREVENTION – EMPLOYMENT/CIVIL
RIGHTS)
WHEREAS, the City of Oakland employed Sarai Crain (“ Claimant”) as the Deputy Chief of Violence Prevention from June 2020 to February 2022;
WHEREAS, Claimant, who identifies as a Black woman, filed a claim with the City of Oakland through a letter from her counsel dated March 25, 2022, alleging that she was subjected to gender discrimination, harassment, violations of the Equal and Fair Pay Acts, and retaliation by the City’s Chief of Violence Prevention;
WHEREAS, the City den ies any wrongdoing or liability and do es not admit any of Claimant’s allegations; and
WHEREAS, the City has considered all the evidence, litigation costs, and litigation risks in this case; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That the City Attorney is authorized and directed to compromise and settle the Claim of Sarai Crain, City Attorney’s File No. 35148, for the sum of Two Hundred Sixty-Eight Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ( $268,000.00), payable to Sarai Crain, less applicable withholdings and deductions from the portion designated for alleged lost wages; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City Attorney is further authorized and directed to take whatever steps as may be necessary to effect said settlement.
