Re: ADOPT RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
OAKLAND ZOO
Dear City Council Colleagues and Members of the Public,
My office is proud to bring forth this Resolution to honor and commemorate the Oakland Zoo for its 100th year anniversary and significant contributions to the City of Oakland and its residents.
The Oakland Zoo was founded on June 6, 1922, by Henry A Snow and Sidney Snow . In the past 100 years, the Oakland Zoo has grown and moved within our City of Oakland, from a historic mansion in downtown Oakland, to Joaquin Miller Park in 1926, to its permanent home in Knowland Park in 1939 . The Oakland Zoo continues evolving with the changing times, wholly dedicated to the pursuit of protecting nature, wildlife, and pioneering the best practices in humane animal care, welfare and advocating for animals everywhere.
The Oakland Zoo is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of wildlife everywhere, provides medical rehabilitation and care to orphaned wildlife in California and beyond , and offers thousands of children access to science-based nature and environmental education, both in-person and virtually. The Zoo also provides jobs to thousands of Oakland youth, is acclaimed and recognized by national media as a Top U.S. Zoo for guests of all ages and is ranked as a top cultural attraction in the Greater Bay Area.
Today we honor the Oakland Zoo’s significant contribution s to the City of Oakland over the past 100 years and do hereby recognize June 6, 2022, and each year after, as “Oakland Zoo Day” in the City of Oakland.
I respectfully request the adoption of this Resolution honoring, commending and extending sincere gratitude to the Oakland Zoo for its 100 years of exceptional, devoted, and innovative service to the City of Oakland.
Yours in Service,
Treva Reid
Councilmember, District 7
