Interests & Experiences
Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.

My family moved to Oakland when I was 2 years old in 1980 and have always gone to Fairyland. I was one of the many children that Fairyland gave a safe, fun and educational place to go to when life was sometimes not so pleasant. As a long time Oakland resident, I believe in the mission and tradition of Fairyland. We believe in the fun that Fairyland offers, but also that Fairyland is a place for healing and for learning. The literacy programs at Fairyland has helped numerous children. My husband and I live in Oakland and own three restaurants in Oakland. We are deeply rooted in The Town.

Please submit your resume or curriculum vitae. You may upload a document. (A Word format is preferred.) Alternatively, you may paste the text of your resume in the field provided below.

Please paste the text of your resume or curriculum vitae below.

Jana Pastena is a proud Oakland resident. Her family moved to Oakland in 1980 when she was 2 years old.

Her grandma would take Jana and her brother to fairyland every week. She even still has some of the keys.

Jana is a proud graduate of Oakland’s Mills College where she earned a degree in Ethnic Studies.

She graduated from Golden Gate University School of Law in 2012.

Jana has always loved Oakland and
what it’s diversity meant to her interracial family.

She felt like there was a place she and her family finally belonged and could move about the community together without fear.

She met her husband, Chris, in
2004 and he too was soon enamored with Oakland. The two used their culinary and social justice backgrounds to give back to Oakland and decided Oakland was the place to open their restaurants Chop Bar (2009), Lungomare (2013) and Calavera (2015).

Chop Bar opened during a harsh recession and Jana
is most proud of being able to offer good jobs to Oakland residents during that difficult time in the country, as well as creating a place of community for Chop Bar’s neighbors.

Jana has helped Oakland grow to be
the culinary destination that the world is talking about. Jana currently sits on the Board of the Oakland Indie Alliance, and uses her influence in Oakland to support charitable causes that support children, the arts and the homeless.
