Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.
Until I retired two years ago, I worked as a landscape architect/project manager, designing and managing infrastructure projects with public agencies in the Bay Area. While I have lived in East Oakland for the past twenty years, much of my work has been outside of Oakland, in the nearby communities of Berkeley, Fremont, Livermore, and San Francisco. In the years 1999- 2000, however, while employed with a private design firm in Berkeley and living near the Lake, I had the opportunity to work on the upgrades of 35 tot lots across the City of Oakland as part of the Measure I and K Bond funding. The project took me to all parts of the City that I hadn't known before, and it was my introduction to the neighborhoods of East Oakland. To this day, a number of these small playgrounds still exist with the surfaces and equipment installed 22 years ago, reflecting a reality of a City with limited resources and many competing priorities.
While I was between jobs with Livermore and San Francisco in 2017, I signed up to be a volunteer with the Elmhurst Branch Library. Through the Friends of the Elmhurst Library, I was asked to work on a garden plan to enhance the library's backyard, and then in the following years, I helped to coordinate the annual Earth Day event. The Earth Day activities were suspended for a couple of years due to the pandemic, but earlier this year I was delighted to be part of the energetic revival of the event. Through my work in parks and recreation, and developing outdoor learning environments in schools, I am keenly aware of the outsized benefits and, at times, under-appreciation of the role that such public institutions, including libraries, play in the well-being and success of a community. It would give me great pleasure to serve on the LAC for the City of Oakland, and to be able to advocate for the Oakland libraries that I've come to know and appreciate.

Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.
I am writing today to express my interest in becoming an Oakland Library Commission (OLC) member.
I
believe my extensive professional and personal experience in government program director, budget development and submission, engagement with community leaders and city officials, and the development of innovation in service delivery makes me uniquely qualified to serve on the Oakland Public Library Commission.
I will bring my knowledge, skills and abilities to the commission to help empower, connect and nurture all people is in line with the mission and values of the OLC.
I am a 30-year Oakland
resident who has lived many of those years in East Oakland, Allendale and Crestmont areas of Oakland. I am an Afro Cuban, openly gay woman who has dedicated my life to public service and advancing the voice and needs of marginalized communities. It is the calling of my life. In my chosen profession, I continue to serve as the director of the San Francisco Department of Child Support Services for almost 20 years, managing operations, budget and finance, statewide legislation, and community outreach. I have also dedicated much of my time to volunteerism. I have volunteered with the SF NAACP, the Young Women’s Freedom Center. I currently serve the Alameda County Probation Department Community Advisory Board on Reentry Services, the San Francisco Reentry Council, Sentencing Commission, Family Violence Council, the Boys, and Girls Club, and the Friends and Stewards of the African American Museum and Library.
My relationship and commitment to the public library system started at the tender age of seven years old in the Bronx, New York. A classmate and I were walking home from school one day when a car pulled up, and a man extended an arm out the car window with a gun and demanded that my friend Rosa and I get into his car. A lady walked up and immediately stood between Rosa and me and the gunman and told him to leave us alone. We are only children, and she would report the car’s license plate to the police. The gunman sped away! Miss Giovanni, who stopped and risked her life for Rosa and me, was a librarian.
She walked us home and spoke to our parents about Rosa and me joining the Super Kids after School Reading Program at the Parchester Branch (Bronx) of the New York Public Library.
After school, I spent hours in the library reading, helping at the counter, and participating in read-aloud circles, where each kid would read from a chosen book and talk about what the story meant to them. That was my first book club! As a treat, Miss Giovanni took all the Super Kids into Manhattan to visit the main branch of the New York Public Library System. All I can say is - wow!!! One story we read as Super Kids
that stayed with me well into adulthood was Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. When I first moved to Oakland, California, I volunteered as a tutor at the Adeline Branch of the Oakland Public Library System. I met many young people from West Oakland who would come in for help with their homework.
One day a young African American boy asked me for help with his reading assignment, which was to read – you guessed it - Romeo and Juliet! Well, life had come full circle for me at that moment! Intimidated by language as I once was, he was reluctant to dive into the book. Some words had double meanings, like “company,” which confused him as it did me. Once we conquered the prose of Shakespeare (armed with a dictionary by our side), he found the story both entertaining and relevant as he was about the same age as the main characters and had a girlfriend. No longer intimated by words, he declared he was a Super Kid empowered to learn anything he wanted! All he had to do was pull out his Webster’s Dictionary and BAMMM!
I continue my relationship with the Oakland Public Library System as a Board Member of the Friends-Stewards of the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (FSAAMLO). There, I found both community and a cause to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of libraries. I met like-minded black and brown people dedicated to preserving and sharing precious historical archives that chronicle the African American experience in the Bay Area. When I walked into the African American Museum and Library, it felt auspicious, grand, and reverent.
The pandemics of COVID 19 and the worsening of racial
inequity have left historically marginalized communities further behind significantly. I believe the public library has “super powers” that can change the lives of young people. Now more than ever, the public library system is a beacon of hope, opportunity, and safety for so many black and brown children. It serves as a place of community that combats the loneliness and isolation that many seniors experience. It serves as a respite for the unhoused people and a place to start a job search, and most importantly, it serves as a place to dream big dreams, learn new skills, and find one’s voice and read, read, read! I hope
you will find both my professional and personal experience of value to the Commission, and I thank you for the opportunity to apply.

To Whom It May Concern, My name is Alex and I am a young professional and graduate student at UC Berkeley, and a resident of Oakland. I am applying for consideration to the selected boards/commissions because I am passionate about local government and want to give my time and energy to advancing initiatives that can improve the lives of my fellow neighbors. I have experience in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors that I believe can contribute to the furtherance of these commissions' aims. Specifically, as a consultant for large companies at Bain & Co I have a wealth of expertise in financial analysis, primary and secondary research, and written communication. As a Strategy Extern for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I honed similar skills in a nonprofit setting and also practiced my ability to engage with the community members of external stakeholders the museum serves, as is crucial to these public commissions. Finally, as a volunteer coordinator for San Francisco Transit Riders (SFTR), I have been involved in community organizing for improved public transit and street safety in San Francisco-- experience that I believe demonstrates my commitment to local community development and my desire to contribute to good governance and public administration. I have chosen the selected boards/commissions because they are most directly relevant advancing economic development and city services in Oakland. I hope that as a member of a board/commission I will have the opportunity to give my skills and abilities to improving the lives of others and expand my knowledge by connecting with other civil servants and community stakeholders. I am a retired veteran with a 100% disability rating from the Veterans Administration after 31 years of active military service. I am passionate about helping veterans integrate into the Oakland Community. I advocate for veteran-focused programs that increase veterans’ job skills, improve accessibility to benefits and programs, and increase veterans’ education on their rights and opportunities. There are 11,179 veterans living in Oakland according to the 2021 census. I am eager to help the City of Oakland successfully integrate veterans into our community after their service to our nation. First, I would like to contribute veteran advocacy on the city budget advisory commission to ensure that veterans’ issues are considered when resources are allocated. Second, I would like to help the workforce development board ensure that veterans become productive citizens by transferring their military skills to relevant civilian occupations, and that they can share their unique skills and experience with other members of the community. Lastly, libraries are key resources for veterans who are trying to change the focus of their lives and, in many cases, get off the streets. How we structure veteran support in libraries can have a major impact on the veteran community. My own experience in our armed forces includes managing programs in the Department of Defense with budgets exceeding $250 million, directing staff in support of Defense priorities for members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and managing training and development programs for thousands of service members as they enter the service, prepare for and execute operations, and prepare for exiting the service. I also currently serve as a visiting research fellow and a lecturer in public policy at Stanford University. This gives me access to the latest research related to the most pressing policy and social issues of our times. My goal is to help veterans integrate into our Oakland community. It would be an honor to do that through these critical advisory boards.
