RESOLUTIONIN CELEBRATIONOFMAY 2023AS AFFORDABLEHOUSINGMONTHAND CELEBRATING THE SERVICE ANDLEADERSHIPOF OUR AFFORDABLEHOUSINGPROVIDERSTOWARDAMOREVIBRANT, EQUITABLEANDJUSTCITY WHEREAS,qualityaffordablehomesare vitalto healthy, safe,andraciallyjustcommunities;and WHEREAS,evenbeforecurrenthighinflationrates,increasinghousingcostsledlongtimeresidentsto bedisplaced,livein overcrowdedhomes,or experiencehomelessness,threateningourregion’sracialdiversityandeconomicopportunity;and WHEREAS,AsianandPacificIslandersAmericanshaveledandjoinedalonglegacyofactivismandorganizingin theUnitedStatesin themovementsforcivilrights,immigrants’rights,women’s rights,workers’rights,LGBTQrights,racialjustice,andenvironmentaljustice,muchof whichtookrootin OaklandandthesurroundingBayAreaduringthe1960sandcontinuestoday;and WHEREAS,Oaklandis hometonearly70,000AsianandPacificIslanderAmericans,andAsianandPacificIslanderAmericansareoneofthefastestgrowingethnicpopulationsinCaliforniaandtheUnitedStates;and WHEREAS,the Stateof California’s COVID-19emergencydeclarationhasbeenterminatedandtheshort-termprotectionsaffordedto renters,includingEvictionMoratoria,duringthepandemicarecomingtoanend,requiringlong-term,sustainablesolutionstopromotehousingsecurityandmitigatemassdisplacement;and WHEREAS,thecelebrationof AsianandPacificIslanderAmericanHeritageMonthoffersOaklandresidentsanopportunitytorecognizetheachievements,contributions,challenges,andhistoryofAsianandPacificIslanderAmericans;and WHEREAS,stableaffordablehomesarethesolutionto homelessness,andsupportseniors,families,youth,veterans,peoplewithdisabilitiesor specialneeds,andourwholecommunity;and 2646873v7- updated03/2/2021
WHEREAS,jurisdictionssuchastheCityofOaklandareontheir6

CycleHousingElement,theirplantomeetthehousingneedsoftheircommunity, andarenowaccountabletoimplementprogramsandpoliciesthatpromoteaffordabledevelopmentandaffirmativelyfurtherfairhousingforlow-incomecommunitiesandcommunitiesofcolor;and WHEREAS,localhousingorganizationsare continuingto recognizeMayas BayAreaAffordableHousingMonthbecauseregionalactiontoa growingregionalhousingcrisisis anessentialpartof recoveryfromthepandemicandtheworkto ensurethateveryonehasanaffordableandstablehome;and WHEREAS,EastBayHousingOrganizationshasorganizedAffordableHousingWeekfor27years,acknowledgingtheneedforandbenefitsofaffordablehomes;nowthereforebeit, RESOLVEDthattheOaklandCityCouncilherebyproclaimsMayas AffordableHousingMonthintheCityofOaklandandcommitstocontinueitsworktosupportaffordableandstablehousingat thelocal,regional,stateandfederallevelandhonorstheserviceandleadershipofaffordablehousingorganizationscontributingtoamorevibrantandjustOakland.
