Interests & Experiences
Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.

As a student I helped restore Plastered walls, doors and windows of a 100 year old church in Astoria Oregon. When I worked for KHS&S I worked on the restoration project of the San Francisco Veterans War Memorial. Later when I for Patrick J. Ruane, Inc., I restored the decorative plaster ceiling from water damage at the Beacon Grand Hotel (formally the Sir Francis Drake). Later with PJR, I restored SF's old Mining Exchange Building. I worked as a Plasterer for over a decade and I specialized in ornamental plastering. I have read the Preservation Briefs 21 & 23.

T ongue Point Job Corps Center Astoria, OR
07/2012
Learned the basics of the Plastering craft as well as all my soft skills that lead the foundation for my employability as a worker. Volunteered my time on and off center.

Enrolled at the local community college where I was given the opportunity to work on a 100-year-old church that needed to be resorted. I completed it with flying colors.

KHS&S Contractors San Francisco, CA
03/2014
Began work with KHS&S as a Firer Proofer Apprentice at the SF General Hospital.

Later I was hired to work on the SF Veterans War Memorial building. There we restored the building using the closest available materials. On that building there were 7000 sacks of gypsum plaster for the interior walls & ceilings and 1400 feet of cornice molding that was run in place.

Patrick J. Ruane, Inc. San Francisco, CA
07/2017
I continued my Plastering Apprenticeship with PJR until I graduated as a Journeyperson Plasterer. In that time I was fortunate to work on many historical churches, schools and other city landmarks. Namely, the San Francisco Mining Exchange Building located at 350 Bush St. For that building I Created rubber molds of original pieces harvested from the building. After, I cast plaster copies from those mold that I later installed in the building.

Plasterer’s & Shop Hand’s Local 66, OPCMIA Oakland, CA
02/2022
I began work for my Local Union as an Organizer. This meant speaking with unorganized workers and speaking to them about their conditions. This sometimes meant I needed to investigate and document misclassifications of workers and worker violation, such as unsafe working conditions and unfair pay rates. Later I became the Business Agent for my Local Union and am serving my membership as a trustee on their behaves for their medical and pension plans. It is my responsibility to fairly represent them and attend to their needs as a fiduciary.

Closing Remarks:

It is my belief that I am qualified not only because of my in-site as an applicator, but also for my passion to preserve our landmarks for future generations to appreciate. I have read the Preservation Briefs 21 & 23 and from that I understand the care and detail of maintaining our beloved buildings. It is important to know our history so that we as a city can plot our course to the future. That is a legacy that I want to preserve.
