Executive Director
ULI San Francisco
March 2016 – Present
San Francisco, CA
A ULI member since 2007, I joined ULI SF as a Director in 2016, and was promoted to Senior Director in 2018, and Executive Director in 2021. ULI SF is a mission-driven organization with over 2,200 local members, which creates educational programming for the industry, provides technical assistance to local governments, and cultivates solutions to challenging land use issues.

In my role at ULI SF, I have led all of the organization’s public sector initiatives, including our Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) program and training for city staff and public officials. I collaborated with members to launch Housing the Bay, an initiative bringing together dozens of public, private, labor, and community organizations to share ideas and strategies and to foster equitable solutions to the region’s severe housing shortage. I was also instrumental in launching and directing ULI’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts, and have touched nearly all of ULI SF's programmatic work during my tenure.

I recruit and manage a team of five who support our educational programming, member committees, marketing, and communications. Additionally I manage ULI SF's budget and recently led the organization through a Strategic Plan that is guiding our work for the next two years.

Additionally, I served on the ULI America's DEI Staff Task Force and co-chaired

As part of a multi-disciplinary office, I led HR&A’s marketing and business development efforts in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington DC. This included, but was not limited to: collaboration with HR&A Partners and staff to develop and execute the firm’s marketing strategy nationwide; increasing the firm's presence in new markets and establishing new revenue streams; communicating HR&A’s unique value-adds to clients; and promoting and supporting HR&A as a thought leader through conferences, interviews, and publications. I recruited, retained, and mentored a marketing team in the NY office and oversaw their work on the firm's website and social media presence, the design of marketing materials, management of proposal responses, and teaming for business development leads. I oversaw the firms pipeline of business development nationwide, formed multidisciplinary teams for large pursuits, and managed staff from all four offices in proposal responses and interview preparation.

ALEX RANDOLPH
• Oakland, California 94607 • 415- @gmail.com
I am interested in an appointment to a seat on Oakland’s Planning Commission. I will serve the City of Oakland well with my knowledge of how city government operates. My background as a former community college trustee, West-Oakland resident, and LGBTQ+ community advocate, allows me to provide a unique perspective on items up for consideration at the commission. Additionally, my policy and business experience in housing and construction at all levels of government—local, state, and federal, allows me to look at projects with a focus on livable and sustainable neighborhoods.

During my term as a Trustee on the Community College Board, I was successful in increasing the percentage of affordable housing, including dedicated units for students and faculty/staff, on several development projects. I saw first-hand how California’s homeless crisis is directly linked to the lack of affordable housing, both for low- income and middle-income residents. Several of our students and staff lived out of their car and I learned from them how it impacts every aspect of their life. Solving this crisis has been one of my passions and I want to help Oakland become a leader in the Bay-Area when it comes to first-of-its-kind projects.

As a West-Oakland resident, I see both the opportunities and consequences new housing projects mean for my community and our city. To move the needle, Oakland needs to expedite building housing over the next couple of years, but not at any cost. With the creation and adoption of the 2045 General Plan, all of us need to ensure that this once-in-a-generation opportunity is focused on equity, justice, and sustainability. I am excited that Oakland’s first environmental justice element will be integral to our collective goals and policies at the planning department and city-at-large.

Finally, during my over 17-year public-service career and tenure on multiple community-based organization boards, I was elected by my colleagues to serve as President, Chair, and Vice-Chair multiple times. This recognition is a testament to my strong and balanced work ethic dedicated to the mission at hand. I am proud of my ability to work with a diverse set of invested stakeholders and take a balanced/educated position on issues in front of me.

I would love to continue my long-time public service with the City of Oakland, and it would be my honor to serve on the Oakland Planning Commission. I would be available to serve immediately upon confirmation and I would devote my full attention and resources to being an effective city commissioner.

Thank you for your consideration of my application and please let me know if you have any questions or require further information.

Sincerely,
Alex Randolph
