My exper ence work ng as a Program Coord nator and Commun ty Organ zer at the East Oak and Co ect ve, my degree n Landscape Arch tecture, and my persona use of Oak and's b ke fac t es are most re evant to the B cyc e and Pedestr an Advocacy Comm ss on's m ss on n severa ways. These tra ts as a commun ty member, organ zer, and nterest n des gn can a gn w th the comm ss on's m ss on to mprove the cond t ons and safety of pedestr ans and cyc sts n the r respect ve commun t es. At the East Oak and Co ect ve, I started as an Organ zer n the Commun ty P ann ng Department. My f rst project was work ng on a feas b ty study ca ed Power The Peop e. Th s project a med to get East Oak and res dents access to the Mart n Luther K ng Jr. Shore ne by nvest gat ng ex st ng soc oeconom c and phys ca barr ers, zero-waste moda t es, access b ty, and cu tura y competent programm ng. Ind v dua s and partnersh ps n East Oak and cou d advocate for better nfrastructure, such as safer s dewa ks, ded cated b ke anes, and mproved traff c ca m ng measures by engag ng n commun ty organ z ng efforts. I ass sted n advocacy efforts for safer streets through commun ty b ke r des and guer a- ke des gn tact cs where commun ty members gathered to post up s ow street s gnage and other temporary ca m ng nfrastructure.
Th s a gns w th the comm ss on's m ss on to promote the needs and r ghts of pedestr ans and cyc sts and ensure the r vo ces are heard n matters that affect the r safety and access b ty. Furthermore, commun ty organ z ng taught me to gather nput from res dents, dent fy areas of concern, and work together to deve op so ut ons and advocate for change by host ng month y commun ty p ann ng meet ngs re ated to the Power The Peop e project. There was a so another project named Mob ty For A , n wh ch I he ped p an a program that wou d d str bute e-b kes and trad t ona b kes to nd v dua s fac ng unemp oyment or underemp oyment as a means of cost-effect ve transportat on. Wh e I was not present to see how the program performed, I earned to take nput from prev ous vers ons of th s program to accommodate more needs. The comm ss on can benef t from the ns ghts and perspect ves brought forth through commun ty organ z ng efforts n East Oak and, he p ng to gu de the r recommendat ons and n t at ves n an often over ooked p ace. Wh e my know edge s not spec f c to East Oak and or commun ty organ z ng efforts there, I can prov de genera nformat on, t ps, and strateg es on how to engage n commun ty organ z ng and advocate for mproved b cyc e and pedestr an nfrastructure. My stud es as an undergrad at UC Berke ey to pursue Landscape Arch tecture as a career have g ven me some ns ght nto des gn ng pub c spaces that are safe, access b e, and attract ve for pedestr ans and b cyc sts. I can app y th s know edge to deve op recommendat ons and proposa s for nfrastructure mprovements that promote wa k ng and b cyc ng as safe and v ab e modes of transportat on. As part of my stud es, I have a so earned how to ncorporate susta nab e des gn and green nfrastructure n t at ves nto my work. By ncorporat ng green nfrastructure e ements ke b oswa es, ra n gardens, and permeab e pav ng nto b cyc e and pedestr an nfrastructure projects, we can he p mprove water qua ty, reduce the mpact of stormwater runoff, mprove a r qua ty, and prov de other env ronmenta benef ts. Moreover, andscape arch tecture ba ances the phys ca and natura env ronment w th soc a and cu tura factors. In the same way, the B cyc e and Pedestr an Advocacy Comm ss on's m ss on seeks to promote a safe and susta nab e transportat on system that s equ tab e and access b e to everyone, regard ess of soc oeconom c background. I can he p the comm ss on dent fy how to ba ance phys ca nfrastructure mprovements w th soc a and env ronmenta pr or t es to create a comprehens ve system that benef ts the commun ty. As a f rst- generat on Lat na from East Oak and, I enjoy shar ng the un que exper ences and perspect ves I have been g fted as a f rst-generat on Oak ander. Exposure to mu t p e cu tures, d vers ty, art, and soc a just ce movements nsp res me to be more act ve w th n c ty m ts. As I exp ore a career n Landscape Arch tecture and poss b y Urban P ann ng, I ook forward to restor ng the re at onsh p between the peop e of Oak and and oca eadersh p. Overa , my exper ences prov de me w th re evant sk s and know edge that can contr bute to ach ev ng the B cyc e and Pedestr an Advocacy Comm ss on's m ss on.
