Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Oakland Homeless Commission. My professional and lived experience qualifies me to help the city of Oakland make sound decisions to reduce the affects of homelessness for our residents. Please consider the following qualifications: Over 20 years ago, I went from homelessness to homeowner! I walked the long journey out of homelessness as a young mother of four. I took advantage of the shelter and transitional house system and finally Oakland's section 8 home ownership program. Though my neighborhood is impacted by poverty, I am very proud to own a home in a West Oakland neighborhood I spent the last 15 years working as a service provider and organizer for my unhoused neighbors with a strong emphasis on senior issues. (please see my resume for details) I have served on the Oakland Housing Authority board for the last ten years protecting and expanding our city's affordable housing. I chair the OHA Special Needs Committee where we are instrumental in designing creative programs to bring individuals and families out of homelessness and into permanent affordable housing. I sit on the Homeless Advocacy Working Group where govt, housed and unhoused residents and advocates meet to find middle ground solutions to the challenges to responding to the growing epidemic of homelessness. I am also a board member of the United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County under County Supervisor Nate Miley and was appointed by Governor Newsome to the Master Plan for Aging Advisory Group. I bring my combined experience and deep commitment to end poverty to the commission, realizing how difficult it is to develop responses that produce results that will end homelessness permanently and humanely for the individual and the community. Yet, I am ready to jump into deep waters for my neighbors and my city. Thank you Janny Castillo Janny Castillo
