Interests & Experiences
Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.
As a life long resident of Oakland (26 years) I am invested in the city's state of affairs and development. While attending San Francisco State University I served as the lead undergraduate law clerk for the law office of John Burris where I was intimately exposed the relationship between the police and the community. Being on the other end of needing Police and city assistance and not receiving urged me to put my self in a position to help others who face the same predicament. While I may not have the pedigree of having served on other city boards, I do stand ready and willing to be the change I want to see and to hopefully make some meaningful change in the community which I live and love.

I have been involved with Fruitvale Unity NCPC, now Neighborhood Council for 18 years. As the current Chair of Beat 20x, I have worked to network with and engage other Neighborhood Councils, educate my neighbors on how to work with MACRO, OAK 311, our councilperson's office and Oakland Police Department, through our CRO system. I am interested in working on this Board because in those 18 years of community engagement, I have never heard of the Community Policing Advisory Board. I hope with my networking skills, the CPAB can better reach out to the Neighbor Councils and other Oakland residents concerned with community policing

I'm a longtime resident of Oakland who has been involved in my community since 1994 when I became a Neighborhood Block Captain and a founding member of our neighborhood council (Beat 29x). Since that time, I've become more involved and was elected to various boards and commissions including the Community Policing Advisory Board (CPAB) serving much of the time in leadership positions. My involvement in the Community Policing Advisory Board included helping to write the initial the resolutions governing community policing, helping develop and pass Measure Y (the initial measure authorizing 57 community policing officers) and the developing the corresponding training curriculum for these newly authorized specialized officers. I've also helped build a coalition of neighborhood watch groups in Central East Oakland. My efforts culminated in recognizing me as the 2007 Oakland Mother of the Year. As I've long been involved in neighborhood watch and community policing, I believe I am immensely qualified to be a member of the Community Policing Advisory Board. Please note that my application is for one of the two Neighborhood Watch Steering Committee member seats--I was recently voted by the board to this position.
