INTRODUCEDBYCOUNCILPRESIDENTNIKKIFORTUNATOBASANDCOUNCILMEMBERTREVAREIDRESOLUTIONRECOGNIZINGTHEWEEKOFOCTOBER20TH,2024AS“LOVELIFE”WEEKINTHECITYOFOAKLAND WHEREAS,onApril5,2016,theCityCouncilpassedResolutionNo.86088C.M.S.adopting"LoveLife"astheCityofOakland'sofficialmotto;and WHEREAS,DonaldLacychampionedthetaskofmakingLoveLifetheCity'sofficialmottoandfoundedtheLovelifeFoundationwhichwascreatedtohonortheworkandvisionofhis16-year-olddaughterLoEshe'Lacy;and WHEREAS, LoEshe',whosenamemeans"LoveLife"inIbo/Nigerian,wasasuccessfulconflictresolutionmediatorandan innocentvictimof a shootingin WestOaklandonOctober20,1997;and WHEREAS, the "LoveLife"mottorespondsto ourcommunaldesireto buildaninclusive,equitable,andauthenticOaklandanddemonstratesunitedcareandconcerntoinformandguideourpracticesin ourquestto makeOaklanda safe,just,sustainable,equitableandvibrantcity;and WHEREAS, throughtheadoptionofthismotto,wedenounceviolenceinallforms,theconditionsthatcreateviolenceandseektohonoreverysinglelifelostinOaklandfromactsofviolenceandprovidesupportandloveforallwhosufferundertheconditionsthatviolencecreates;and WHEREAS, throughthismotto,wesettheintentiontomodelloveinpractice,inourwork,proceedings,andprocesses,andhaveestablisheda LoveLifeacknowledgmenttocommencemeetings,gatherings,events,andopenspaceswiththisintention;and WHEREAS, as a city, wecommitto actsofloveasanintentionalforcetogeneratetangiblesolutions,in regardto all policies,declarations,recommendations,resolutions,appointments,andactions;and WHEREAS, werecognizeasleaders,wemustsetanexampleandprecedentforthosewhohaveentrusteduswiththesedutiesandaccepttheresponsibilitytomakeourcityandcommunityabetterplace,leadingwiththeguidingprincipleoflove;and WHEREAS, weacknowledgeandrecognizethatwhenwemodelthispracticeoflove,itwillestablishanormthatwillresonateandbeexemplifiedthroughoutourcityandcreatethechangeweallwishtoseeinourcommunities;and WHEREAS, weacknowledgethatwhenweleadwithloveweareableto upliftathrivingcityrootedinequity, equality, justice,inclusion,andopportunityforallregardlessofrace,gender, age,class,socio-economicstatus,nationality, religion,sexualpreference,housingstatus,orpoliticalaffiliation;and WHEREAS, buildingonourLoveLiveacknowledgment,theCityAdministrationhasworkedto identifywaysto embodythe mottothroughcitywidecommunicationsandactivations;and WHEREAS, onOctober18,2022,theCityCouncilpassedResolutionNo.89445C.M.S.declaringtheweekofOctober20thas"LoveLife"weekintheCityofOakland,beginningOctober2022,andcontinuingeachyearthereafter;and WHEREAS,to activatethe "LoveLife"mottoandmoreprominentlyupliftit toultimatelybe embracedby thecommunity, theCitywillcontinueitsworkthroughtheimplementationof someof theCity'scorestrategiesrelatedto ViolencePreventionandCulturalArts;and WHEREAS, duringLoveLifeWeek,thecitywillhostandupliftcommunityeventsduringtheweekofOctober20ththatunderpinsthemessageofvaluinglife,upliftingloveinourarts,honoringthosespreadinglovethroughtheirwork,andhelpingtostopviolenceinourcommunities;and WHEREAS, thisresolutionisinalignmentwiththecity'scommitmenttoupliftamodelof LoveLifethroughits actionplanto implementthecity'smottowithpublicagencypartners,incorporateits useof themottoin all officialcommunication,andbe firmlycommittedtoadoptinga comprehensiveandholisticapproachtoaddressingtheconditionsthatleadto violenceandtowardcreatinga climateof restorationfortheindividualsandcommunitiesimpactedbyviolence;now, therefore,beit RESOLVED: ThattheCityCouncildoesherebyrecognizetheweekofOctober20th,2024as"LoveLifeWeek"intheCityofOakland.
