RESOLUTIONHONORINGANDCELEBRATINGTHEOAKLAND-TRAINEDROWERSFORWINNINGGOLDINTHEMEN’SFOURAT THEPARIS2024OLYMPICGAMES,THEFIRSTU.S.GOLDIN64YEARS WHEREAS, theUnitedStateshasparticipatedin Olympicrowingsincethesport’sintroductioninthe1900ParisOlympicGames,winninga totalof89rowingmedals,including33gold,32silver, and24bronze;and WHEREAS, atthe2024ParisOlympics,15athletesfromOakland’sCaliforniaRowingClubrepresentedTeamUSA.Oakland-trainedrowersNickMead,JustinBest,MichaelGrady,andLiamCorrigansecuredthegoldmedalinthemen’sfour-rowingeventforthefirsttimein64years.ThismarksthefirstU.S.medalintheeventsince2012anditsfirstgoldintheeventsincethe1960RomeOlympics;and WHEREAS, theseexceptionalathletestrainedat Oakland’s prestigiousCaliforniaRowingClub,foundedbythelateT. GaryRodgersin 2007to offerOlympic-leveltrainingoptionsforrowingintheBayArea;and WHEREAS,today, theclubservesas a valuableresourceforcollege-trainedrowersworldwidewhoaspiretojoinunder-23orSeniorNationalTeamcompetitions.Thispastsummer,theclub’s developmentteam,composedof athletesaspiringto maketheU.S.NationalandOlympicteams,wonthreeeventsat theU.S.RowingNationalChampionships,thehighestdomesticchampionshipinrowing;and WHEREAS, CaliforniaRowingClubcoachesMikeTetiandTimMcLarenreceivedtheOrderof Ikkosat the2024ParisOlympicGames,a prestigiousawardpresentedbyOlympicmedaliststocoacheswhohavesignificantlycontributedtotheirOlympicsuccess;and WHEREAS, the outstandingachievements,tirelesscommitment,discipline,andresilienceof theseathletesexemplifythe Olympicspiritand inspirea newgeneration,reinforcingtheimportanceofperseveranceandteamworkontheinternationalstage;and THEREFOREBEITRESOLVED:thattheCityOfOaklanddoesherebyhonorandcelebratetheOakland-trainedrowersforwinningGoldin themen’s fourat theParis2024Olympicgames,thefirstU.S.Goldin64years.
