Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.

My name is Kirsten Flagg. I'm a longtime resident of Oakland. I'd like to apply to any future openings on the BPAC committee.

I am passionate about making equitable safety
improvements to our roads, and believe my work/life experience may bring a helpful perspective to the committee. I'm a mom of an 8 yo attending an OUSD public school in East Oakland, where I also live and work. One of the teachers at his school was recently struck by a motorist (hit & run) as she was leaving school. We only recently got news that she was stable after days in the ICU. There's been many similar near misses. The school is located in a residential neighborhood.

I'm also a nurse practitioner. I work in a safety net setting (Highland Hospital & Eastmont Wellness). The majority of my patients have suffered both the direct and indirect consequences of unsafe streets. Many suffer from long-term injuries from accidents, which have both physical and mental health sequelae. Others avoid walking or biking in their own neighborhood due to multiple safety concerns—this inactivity of course has other negative health outcomes.

Finally, I'm a cyclist. I've been cycling here in Oakland since I moved here in 2011. I still bike to work but not without a lot of trepidation. I no longer take my kid out on a bike with me. We drive to Alameda so that my kid knows how to ride.

When we lived in North Oakland, we'd bike to preschool together. The inequity between streets in North & East Oakland is appalling.

I know I'm not naming anything many others
could also point to. My hope is that my background in health care, and the many leadership roles I've held there, may be an asset to the committee. I think the framework of viewing unsafe streets as a public health crisis could open up important avenues for advocacy and change.

Interests & Experiences
Please tell us how your qualifications and participation will relate to the requested board and/or commission's mission.

As a long-tme bicycle commuter living in Deep East Oakland, I can speak firsthand to the dangers of riding through my neighborhood and the lack of safety or planning provided for East Oakland pedestrians and bicyclists. I have biked much of Oakland, and I can also speak to the inequities of city planning as reflected in the preferential creation of safe biking and walking spaces in richer areas of the city. That said, I can see real potential in making major transit and recreational corridors in East Oakland safer to bike and walk through and to.

More fundamentally, I truly love biking and bike-commuting, and it is something I want everyone to be able to safely enjoy.

I have truly valued serving on BPAC for the past three
years, and I feel it is important to give voice to what I see happening in District 6 and to share my community's perspective on bicyclist and pedestrian issues affecting us. District 6 is one of the most impacted areas of Oakland in terms of the number of people hit and killed due to traffic violence, and I want to keep working to ensure D6 gets safer for everyone who lives here. It would be my honor to serve for another three-year term on BPAC, and a privilege to continue to work with the BPAC to make all of Oakland a better place to live, bike, and walk.
