MEMORANDUM DATE: November 25, 2024 TO: City Council and Members of the Public FROM: Councilmember Treva Reid SUBJECT: Adopt A Resolution Honoring And Recognizing The District 7 Neighborhood Council Chairs For Their Outstanding Leadership And Commitment To Empowering Residents, Improving Public Safety, And Fostering Community Engagement In Oakland Dear City Council Colleagues and Members of the Public, This legislation seeks to formally honor the leadership of the Neighborhood Council Chairs across District 7. Also known as “Deep East Oakland,” this district encompasses the neighborhoods between the Oakland International Airport and the Oakland Zoo, as well as those stretching from the Oakland Coliseum to the San Leandro border. It is home to six Neighborhood Councils: • 1. Beat 31X: Coliseum Business Alert Neighborhood Council • 2. Beat 31Y/31Z: Sobrante Park/Brookfield Village/Columbia Gardens/South Stonehurst Neighborhood Council • 3. Beat 32X: North Stonehurst Neighborhood Council • 4. Beat 32Y: MacArthur Corridor Neighborhood Council • 5. Beat 33X/34X: Elmhurst Neighborhood Council • 6. Beat 35X: Castlemont/Lower Golf Links Neighborhood Council • 7. Beat 35Y: South Hills Neighborhood Council Throughout their tenure, these Neighborhood Council Chairs have made a profound impact on their communities. Their unwavering commitment to District 7 has led to: • Enhanced public safety measures, • Infrastructure improvements, • Strengthened communication between residents and City Hall, and • The successful launch of various community engagement initiatives.
Moreover, the Neighborhood Council Chairs have been instrumental in amplifying community voices in City Council decisions, fostering connected and civically engaged communities across the district. I respectfully request that the Council pass a resolution to recognize and honor the Neighborhood Council Chairs of District 7. This recognition offers us the opportunity to celebrate and uplift these true community champions together.
