INTRODUCED BY COUNCILMEMBER UNGER
RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE WEEK OF MAY 18-24, 2025, AS
NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK IN THE CITY OF OAKLAND
WHEREAS, the Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation provide a wide array of operations and services that are an integral part of our community - the health, safety, and comfort of our great City depend on the efficiency and reliability of our shared infrastructures; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation employees plan, design, build, maintain and protect the City of Oakland infrastructure assets; including streets, sidewalks for accessible mobility; sewer and storm drains for flood protection; traffic signals, signs, street lights for transportation safety; parks and tre es for enrich ed green environment; facilities and equipment in support of many additional City services to the public; zero waste recycling and solid waste disposal as integral to Oakland’s sustainability initiatives; long term capital project plans; both short and long term improvements to City infrastructures and facilities including fire stations, libraries, parks, teen and recreation centers, major investment around Lake Merritt; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation are committed to continuous improvement and to being model 21st century agencies; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation are committed to improving relationship, enhancing customer services to all citizens and neighborhoods, and developing stronger community linkage through the Oakland Call Center , website and community outreach; and
WHEREAS, the year 2025 marks the 65th annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association/Canadian Public Works Association; and
WHEREAS, from May 18-24, 2025, the American Public Works Association celebrates National Public Works week throughout the country, with this year’s national theme of “People, Purpose, Presence”; and
WHEREAS, during the week of recognition and celebration, informational displays will be 2 installed in the lobby of 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to proudly present Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, an official Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation Employees Recognition event honoring Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation and recognizing the Department’s employees of the Year will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025; and be it
RESOLVED: That the Oakland City Council does hereby proclaim the week of May 18-24, 2025, as National Public Works Week in the City of Oakland and encourages all citizens to recognize and commend the Oakland Public Works Department and Department of Transportation for their dedication and service to the community of Oakland.
