DATE: March 12,2026

Colleagues on the City Council and Members of the Public, I write in strong support of the resolution honoring Bishop Charley Hames, Jr. for his distinguished leadership, service, and lasting contributions to the City of Oakland. Bishop Hames has served as Senior Pastor of Beebe Memorial Cathedral CME Church for over twenty years, during which time the congregation grew from 81 members to more than 3,400 members, becoming one of the most influential houses of worship in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2022, he was elected the 66th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where he now provides spiritual leadership to congregations across the 9th Episcopal District.

Through his ministry, civic engagement, and advocacy, Bishop Hames has demonstrated a strong commitment to faith, community empowerment, and social justice. This resolution recognizes his enduring impact on the spiritual, civic, and community life of Oakland and celebrates his continued leadership and service.

Thank you!
Respectfully submitted,

Councilmember Unger
