RESOLUTION THANKING REP. LATEEFAH SIMON FOR CO
SPONSORING H.R. 8707, THE NO FUNDS FOR IRAN WAR ACT
WHEREAS, on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, the United States, in coordination with Israel, launched strikes on Iran without Congressional approval; and WHEREAS, under Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution, Congress holds the authority to authorize the use of military force, and the recent military action in Iran occuned without explicit Congressional authorization, raising significant concerns about compliance with established separation-of-powers principles; and
WHEREAS, this unilateral action by President Trnmp threatens the checks and balances between the three branches of our national govermnent as established by the Constitution; and WHEREAS, reports indicate that the escalation of hostilities has resulted in loss of life and heightened regional instability; and
WHEREAS, such military conflicts abroad often exacerbate financial hardship, anxiety, hatred, discrimination, and violence domestically; and
WHEREAS, these harmful impacts will only increase the longer this unauthorized war drags on; and
WHEREAS, the continuation of this war undermines the human rights and democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, strengthens authoritarian repression, and obstructs the possibility of peaceful, just, and democratic change within Iran; now, therefore, be it Ill

RESOLVED: that the Oakland City Council expresses its gratitude to Representative Lateefah Simon for co-sponsoring H.R. 8707, the No Funds for Iran War Act.
