CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
CLINICAL ACTIVITIES SUMMARY
Following the completion of my chief residency, I joined the clinical staff of both the Primary Care and Adolescent Health departments in our Federally Qualified Health Center at Children’s Oakland. I also worked as a moonlighter in the Emergency Department Annex (Urgent Care) for several years. These roles have provided me the opportunity to care for patients and their families aged birth to 25 years old in both the primary care and acute care settings. My passion is serving a patient population that is often neglected, but undoubtedly deserves the very best care. Helping to navigate the obstacles that socioeconomic disadvantages create is what I strive to do, in partnership with the patients and families I serve, on a daily basis.
In 2015, I became the Director of the Resident Continuity Clinics. Working closely with the chief residents, I assist in ensuring that each resident meets their ACGME Continuity Clinic annual requirements. We also work to ensure each resident has the opportunity to develop patient panels and true continuity, creating a more enriching experience over their 3-year training. I also coordinate the Sy Harris Professorship Experience (a role currently filled by Dr. Arthur Lande) and submit biannual narrative evaluations for each of the 80+ residents that rotate through our clinics each year.
As the Director of Resident Wellness and Wellbeing I worked in several different capacities to ensure resident wellness was a top priority. I facilitated one of three monthly resident support groups, I coordinated annual retreats for each of the 3 resident classes and in my final year, helped in coordinating and served as a faculty advisor for the Resident Wellness Committee, an inaugural effort created by the residents to ensure a culture of wellness and mentorship is prioritized during their residency.
I was asked to be the interim Medical Director at the Alameda County JJC until a new head of the department of Adolescent Health care was hired. During my tenure there, I was able to help coordinate and facilitate the medical unit in the JJC. I participated in direct patient care as well as a significant amount of care coordination. Also provided quite a bit of teaching to detained minors. I’ve continued to work there as a medical provider intermittently since that time.
In 2019, I became the Medical Director of both the Youth Uprising/Castlemont and Chappell-Hayes/McClymond’s Health Centers, both of which are Children’s Oakland School Based Heath Centers (SBHC). Working in collaboration with our behavioral health colleagues, our SBHCs provide comprehensive health care. All CHO interns as well as visiting interns from both Kaiser and CPMC rotate through these sites for one month and receive most of their Adolescent Health teaching and training through this rotation.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE
SERVICE ACTIVITIES SUMMARY
A significant portion of both my residency training and early post-residency work involved participation in the Quality Improvement initiatives at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.
I participated in several week-long Quality Improvement workshops, all of which followed the “Kaizen” model of Quality Built-In (QBI) Lean methodologies. Due to my commitment and performance in several workshops, I was invited to participate in the process to become a certified QBI Lean Leader. I have completed 6 of the 7 requirements to earn this certification, the process of which includes; participation in Kaizen workshops as both a team member and workshop lead, participation on a Value Stream Mapping Workshop, attendance at 8 Lean Leader didactic training sessions and completion of both written and oral “Module Marathon” examinations.
I have precepted several medical students and residents in my role as both an attending in Primary Care as well as in the Adolescent Health Clinics. My role as the Director of the Resident Continuity Clinic as well as my time at the Director of Resident Wellness (positions through the Department of Graduate Medical Education) has allotted many chances to teach and provide mentorship to medical students and residents. These roles also make my participation in opportunities such as the Intern Selection Committee and the Clinical Competency Committee even more relevant and impactful. As the faculty advisor for the inaugural year of the resident-led Wellness Committee, I was able to help a motivated group of residents establish what is now a very active and involved committee. This committee has implemented wellness efforts and mentorship programming that has been extremely well received by our house staff. This program has also added more depth and intrigue into our Pediatric training program, as wellness has exceedingly become more of a priority for practitioners of medicine.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO DIVERSITY
CONTRIBUTIONS TO DIVERSITY
My commitment to advancing diversity in medicine starts with who and what I represent. I am an Oakland native, female physician of color. My identity is something that impacts the special relationships I have developed with my patients (who are predominantly both of color and underserved) and strongly influences the way I teach, mentor and advocate.
Beginning in residency, I participated as a mentor and panelist in CHAMPS (Community Health and Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success), a program designed to expose underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged high school students to the health professions.
Similarly, as a physician participant for the Mentoring in Medicine and Science (MIMS) program, at the Oakland Unified School District Youth Careers Expo and Holy Names High School Women In Medicine Program, I continued to follow my interests by remaining involved in several mentorship opportunities (including panels, small group workshops, Q&A sessions) which are dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented health professionals.
As both a physician volunteer and later medical co-director of the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Primary Care Department Asthma Camp (“Camp Breath Easy”), I have helped to coordinate the care of 80-100 asthmatic patients (predominantly disadvantage youth aged 7- 12yr) during a 5-day, 4-night sleep away camp experience at Camp Arroyo in Livermore, CA.
Each summer, our most medically vulnerable patients look forward to the opportunity to experience nature and the outdoors in ways that neither their disease burden nor socioeconomic standings would typically allow. A significant amount of planning, coordination and organization is required to safely and successfully get these children through the adventurous week. Trauma informed care is often the most needed intervention, a skill that is essential for this type of experience.
The patients served at our Federally Qualified Health Center experience an especially difficult time due to financial strains around the holidays. For this reason, our clinic developed the Holiday Toy Drive (through community partnership), which is on its 7th year and provides gifts for providers to distribute to patients during their appointments through the holiday season. I also coordinate the Holiday-Adopt-a-Family program, providing donated gifts to over 60 of our most disadvantaged families each year, based on their wish-lists. I have coordinated both events as the Physician lead since 2017, a task that requires a significant amount of coordination and organization.
I have volunteered with the Kerry’s Kids program since residency. It is a mobile clinic that provides free vaccinations, health screens and medical exams to children who are uninsured and/or have poor access to medical care.
As a member of the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Pediatric Residency Intern Selection Committee, I interview an average of 20 applicants per interview season, as well as read and rank over 120 applications. I have participated in “Diversity Day” programing since its inception in 2010, a program developed to increase the number of African American and Latin-X applicant recruitment to the program. As a faculty advisor for the Resident Coalition for Diversity and Advocacy, I continue to invest in the commitment our residency program has to diversity.
