6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
The Orange Public Library has been awarded a Parks Pass Grant for Fiscal Year 2022-23 (FY23).
California State Library has generously provided $5,000 in support to our Library to develop the Discover Your State Parks project, featuring outdoors-themed programming, collections, and displays at the three Library locations.
Previously, California State Library sent California Park Passes to every one of the 1,184 public libraries in California. In April 2022, our Library received twelve passes for its patrons to checkout.
Each pass is valid for vehicle day use at over 200 participating state parks in the California State Parks System. Patrons can check out a free pass for two weeks using their library card. Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Orange Public Library & History Center and El Modena and Taft Branch Libraries. Programs will focus on the environment and conservation, outdoor activities and health, hiking and survival skills, and fire safety. Participants will also have the opportunity to check out the Library’s new Explorer Kit backpacks containing binoculars, compass, first aid kit, and assorted books on birdwatching, hiking, and outdoor survival. Programs will be presented from July 2022 through June 2023. All funds must be spent or encumbered by the end of June 2023.
