According to the National Fire Protection Association 1582 standard (NFPA 1582) regarding comprehensive occupational medical program for fire departments, the Fire Department must establish and maintain a confidential occupational medical evaluation program for members.

Occupational medical evaluations are conducted as a baseline for surveillance and annually thereafter. An occupational medical evaluation is performed following a member’s occupational exposure, illness, injury, or protracted absence from the job. The scope of the evaluation is determined by the Fire Department physician after reviewing the type and severity of the condition.

The components of the medical evaluations conform to all applicable U.S. OSHA standards, including 29 CFR 1910.120, “Hazardous waste operations and emergency response,” 29 CFR 1010.134, “Respiratory protection,” 29 CFR 1910.95, “Occupational noise exposure,” and 29 CFR 1910.1030, “Blood borne pathogens.”

Since July 2019, The City’sHuman Resources Department has contracted with Sunrise to provide pre-employment physical services. In March of 2020, the Orange City Fire Department began contracting with Sunrise for annual occupational medical evaluations. Sunrise is also one of two clinics approved by Risk Management for work related injuries or illness.

The current Provider Services Agreement for Sunrise expired on June 30, 2022. The Fire Department is looking to renew a two-year agreement to pay for services received in Fiscal Year 2023 and future services in Fiscal Year 2024. Sunrise has agreed to continue current pricing through June 30, 2023, and has added a slight increase (approximately $20) in pricing for the blood serum draws beginning July 1, 2024. The City has been able to reduce costs for pre-employment and annual occupational medical evaluations by utilizing Sunrise and has been pleased with the services provided.
