ongoing maintenance and repair. These tools and equipment include high pressure airbags, power saws, drill hammers, on-board air compressor, Stanley Tool, rope/rigging equipment, shoring equipment, confined space air, and communication lines. Per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Section 6.2.1.3 of the 1936 Standard on Rescue Tools, the month and year of expiration for airbags shall not be more than 15 years after the date of manufacture. Most of the equipment that is currently housed on USAR 6 is over 20 years old and has reached the end of its service life. The Fire Department must replace this equipment to remain in compliance with NFPA standards and to continue providing safe and effective urban search and rescue services.
Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funding was approved in FY 2023 for the purchase of USAR tools and equipment. This purchase will replace high pressure air bags and associated accessories that have reached the end of their service life on USAR 1. LN Curtis has been identified by the City as a trusted vendor who provides the department with high-quality equipment and a good reputation in the industry. The Fire Department will be purchasing these items through a cooperative purchase agreement awarded to LN Curtis by Sourcewell, Contract #040220. Sourcewell is a cooperative purchasing organization that efficiently handles competitive solicited cooperative contracts for state and local governments, ensuring that all local requirements are always met or exceeded. This approach enables the department to purchase exceptional products from nationally acclaimed suppliers, at the lowest cost available.
