ASSUREON SOLUTION
The Assureon solution will meet all of the required elements of the standard as defined State of California and AIIM. As you know WORM is one requirement of Trusted Systems, but it is not only the ability to WORM. Along with this is the ability for a solution to audit and verify each file and the integrity of that file.
While other products can tell you that a file has been written it does not verify that the file written is in fact an exact copy of every bit and bite of the file. With the Assureon solution not only do we compare the file requested to be written to the original, we acknowledge that a file has in fact received every bit and bite, but we make sure that a file is an exact copy of the original file. This is required by Trusted Systems
Another requirement of Trusted Systems is that each file written must provide an audit process to verify that the file is still there, and in the original state. And while competitors can conduct audits it only monitors the users access to file but does not verify that the file and the integrity of that file. The corruption of a file can occur without even any user interference. Disk storage is a digital medium and as such is subject to something called Bit Riot. Bit Riot is the flipping of an I/O in a file. By an I/O flip it thereby changes the file and thus falls outside of the Trusted Systems standard of being an original file. With Assureon, at least every 90 days (At maximum capacity) or some time frame determined by the user, each individual file is checked to make sure it is still there and that the content of that file is in fact exactly as the original. All this is done automatically with Assureon. If there is an error in a file that does not represent the exact copy of the original such as Bit Riot or something else, Assureon quarantines that file, restores an exact copy of that file by pulling from the secondary site. Cohesity does not do this.
The Assureon solution is our own software and hardware in which we have a unique ability to lock down the hardware from attacks. Many solutions use software and other MFG hardware such as Dell, Pure, HP, Isilon and others that they certified. They do not control this hardware and therefore cannot lock down the system. A case in point; by not controlling both hardware and software it is possible that a user or hacker can gain access to the data by going through the storage device and the controllers. A hacker or employee has to go through the Assureon. This leaves a vulnerability to data and that includes cloud vendors as well, but not Assureon and the AZURE Cloud connector. Recent attacks by hackers have successfully been able to gain access to a copies data in the cloud and they have been deleting backups and Snapshots that have been stored there. Placing your data in the cloud does not immune you from an attack.

Another requirement of Trusted System is the ability to have Third Party Verification of any file sent to the Archive. Nexsan uses NIST which is a Government Site that independently time stamps and dates a file.
This is important for any Chain of Custody requirements and to prevent unauthorized modification of a file.
The importance of this for Trusted Systems is it prevents a user from altering the time and date of any said file. The Laserfiche solution does not offer this type of independence by itself, but ensures that when coupled with Assureon, it meets the full standards.
With regards to Ransomware, a number of our clients use the Assureon solution for the express reason to guard against Ransomware. One way we do this is only Assureon can write to Assureon. Let me expand on that. By preventing any source or bad actor the ability to write to Assureon it thereby prevents someone from hacking or wiring bad data to the storage. No other source other than the Assureon server can write to Assureon. Other storage vendors have applications or end users write directly to their storage. This enables a vulnerability of the server which would own the LUN or Volume on the server to be compromised and deleted, outside of the scope of the Laserfiche/Assureon project. The Assureon protects your data better than any other solution in that the rules set up by administrators cannot be changed. To add another layer of protection, files do not automatically delete once they’ve hit their retention limits. A report tool within the Assureon can report on all data that has met the retention limit. We enable the administrators to either allow the data to become expired OR extend the last access date. By doing so, this increases the level of data security within the system.
