September 28, 2025
WHEREAS, research shows that neighborhoods are a vital factor in creating safe, healthy, and inclusive communities; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of Americans do not know the names of their neighbors and believe a good neighbor is someone who is quiet and leaves them alone; and
WHEREAS, research shows an alarming rise in isolation and loneliness, which impacts physical health, mental health, life expectancy, polarization, and well-being; and WHEREAS, research shows that developing positive neighbor relationships positively impacts mental health, life expectancy, and physical health for individuals; and WHEREAS, research shows that developing positive neighbor relationships positively impacts disaster response, civic engagement, crime prevention, and economic resilience for entire communities; and
WHEREAS, knowing your neighbors has the power to build a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community neighborhood-by-neighborhood; and WHEREAS, National Good Neighbor Day was first proclaimed in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter to help build a sense of community and nurture friendships among neighbors; and
WHEREAS, National Good Neighbor Day has since become an annual movement, cementing a common bond across our nation.
