6. DISCUSSION AND BACKGROUND
Canine Nash has served with the Orange Police Department since 2019. Over the past six years, canine Nash has participated in numerous operations, including narcotics detection, patrol support, suspect apprehension, and public demonstrations.

The canine has been handled exclusively by Officer Logan Shryock, who has built a strong bond with canine Nash through daily care, training, and deployment. Canine Nash has reached the end of his career due to age and is being formally retired from duty.

It is customary and in the best interest of canine Nash and the department to allow the long-time handler to assume ownership upon retirement. The continued companionship provides the dog with stability and comfort while allowing the handler to ensure its proper care in retirement. The transfer will be at no cost to the City, with Officer Logan Shryock assuming full responsibility for future veterinary care and daily needs. The dog will be removed from all departmental liability and will no longer be used in any official law enforcement capacity.

The transfer of ownership agreement with Officer Logan Shryock requires him to indemnify and defend the City for any injuries or property damage arising out of the conduct of Nash. Should Officer Shryock not be able to provide reasonable care for Nash, he agrees to have Nash humanely City of Orange Printed on 2/19/2026Page 1 of 2
