Dear Oxnard City Council,
My name is Ashley Pope and I am the board president of Autism Society Ventura County, as well as the chair for Autism Society Ventura County’s Advocacy Committee. I have a 10 year old son with Autism. Our advocacy committee reviews city, school board, and board of supervisor agendas and advocates for quality of life issues for those with Autism and their families in Ventura County.

Today, we want to comment on item D1, the police department update by Police Chief Jason Beneites. We feel this is the perfect time to share our deepest appreciation for Chief Beneites and his team and Oxnard Police Department. We have had the pleasure to spend several days with the department every April for the past 5 years during "Autism Acceptance Month." We set up a resource table at Starbucks and various community events to sell t-shirts as a fundraiser for ASVC, and with the goal of breaking down communication barriers between the disability community and law enforcement. Oxnard PD makes this goal so easy. They fully embody community policing- they are kind, vulnerable, willing to learn, generous and overall wonderful. We are so lucky to have this wonderful department serve as an example in community policing to all of Ventura County and the State of California.

Oxnard PD served as the catalyst for us to build relationships with neighboring police departments, and we are so grateful to engage those communities' police forces, too.

We hope that our friends at Oxnard PD stay safe and blessed. Thank you for your time.

Ashley Pope
Autism Society Ventura County
President

I enjoyed watching the Police Chief's annual update to the council and the public. However, I noticed that traffic safety was not mentioned in his report. During last year’s report to the Council, there were almost 8 minutes dedicated to breaking down injury and fatal collision data and traffic safety grants the department was involved with. Safe streets align with council priorities of public safety, infrastructure and natural resources, and quality of life. I hope the Chief can present some data on injury and fatal collision trends later today.

During the May 2nd Council Meeting, our City Manager stated: "Given the recent officer-involved shootings recently, we also want to address some of the issues surrounding police training. And also be very transparent about our statistics in terms of complaints, so the chief will provide that in July." For your convenience, I have time-stamped the YouTube livestream of our City Manager's comments (1:30:35) https://www.youtube.com/live/FHBoYquXXvM?si=EFUwz7PUa5rbZSuR&t= I appreciated the Chief's insightful comments about officer contact with emotionally disturbed persons, and I am glad to hear there will be an independent review of department policies and procedures. However, I was disappointed that complaint statistics were omitted from the presentation. To my recollection, they have not been presented previously, but I applaud the City Manager’s efforts in attempting to be transparent and requesting that they be included in the report. I hope we can be “very transparent” about the statistics of complaints, and that information will be presented later today.

I look forward to tuning into the meeting and listening to your fruitful discussion.

Respectfully,
Bryan Rodriguez

Mayor and Council Members,
I urge you to vote against making Oxnard a “Right to choose sanctuary city”. Aboron ends the lives of babies. I think that our council should focus on running our city and stay out of polics. A good use of effort would to find ways to support women who find themselves in an “unwanted” pregnancy. I have more to say, but I only have unl 3pm and my me is up Thank you,
Sharon Ward
