BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees and the holiday called Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed at various times throughout the nation and the world and has been celebrated in Pacifica on the second Saturday of November each year.

The City has maintained membership in the Tree City USA program and believes it is important to continue to maintain membership to support and increase the City’s urban forest. To maintain membership each year the City must hold an Arbor Day celebration, have a community tree ordinance in place, spend at least $2 per capital on urban forestry and maintain a board/commission that overviews tree issues, such as the City’s Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission.

Tree City Pacifica is a non-profit group that serves to celebrate, enhance, and protect the City’s urban forest. Each year since 2019, Tree City Pacifica has partnered with the City to hold an Arbor Day celebration. The City supports and assists with the celebration each year through purchase of trees and assistance with tree planting.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The City typically purchases up to 30 trees for the Arbor Day event and uses City staff to complete work related to planting of trees. These costs are in the range of $8,000.
