CITY OF PACIFICA

COUNCIL AGENDA SUMMARY REPORT
12/12/2022
1 SUBJECT:

Appointment of Ad Hoc Subcommittee for Pride 2023 Event Planning RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Consider appointing a two-councilmember limited-term ad hoc subcommittee to work with Coastside Pride on the planning for 2023 Pride Celebration events in Pacifica.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

During 2022 Mayor Bier and Councilmember Beckmeyer worked closely and regularly with Coastside Pride and other community and business representatives to plan Pacifica Pride Celebration events for June 2022. Their work has continued into fall and winter to debrief about the 2022 events and begin planning for more extensive events for 2023.

To formalize their role on a temporary basis, they are requesting the Council’s consideration of appointing them to a two-councilmember limited-term ad hoc subcommittee that will meet at least monthly and actively work with Coastside Pride and other community and business representatives to plan for Pride events in 2023. The duration of the ad hoc subcommittee is intended to extend through summer 2023, to encompass the implementation of events in June and allow time for debriefing following the events. This upcoming year’s work on planning and preparations, including potential parade logistics, is anticipated to be intensive and will lay the groundwork for future annual events, therefore formal approval by the Council of their work as an ad hoc subcommittee is being requested.

Future year’s work on Pacifica Pride event planning may be more appropriately designated as a Council Liaison assignment to a Coastside Pride/Community Group, much like the Council currently has a liaison designation to the Fog Fest Organizing Group.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION:

The Council could decide not to appoint two councilmembers to a limited-term ad hoc subcommittee.

RELATION TO CITY COUNCIL GOALS AND WORK PLAN:
