BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
During the development of the FY 2023-24 Budget, the Council discussed a crucial need to replace the Structural Firefighting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in alignment with the safety standards outlined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1971 Standards, and allocated replacement funds in the adopted budget.
Each firefighter is equipped with two sets of Structural Firefighting PPE, with one set being replaced every 5 years, once it reaches its 10-year service life. This proactive approach prioritizes firefighter safety and ensures that our first responders’ team has the most reliable gear to perform their duties effectively.
The North County Fire Authority (NCFA) has partnered with LN Curtis, an authorized vendor, and a sole provider serving our region, for procuring the necessary Structural Firefighting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This vendor is also a member of NPPGov purchasing network which allows NCFA to secure the lowest pre-negotiated pricing available within the fire industry.
By prioritizing the safety and well-being of our firefighters through the regular replacement of PPE we continue to uphold our commitment to excellence in fire protection and emergency response.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION:
Delaying the purchase of the PPE to the future year will adversely affect the personnel safety, operational efficiencies and the morale in the Fire Department.
RELATION TO CITY COUNCIL GOALS AND WORK PLAN:
Supports City Council goal of enhancing the organizational and fiscal stability.
