Petition: Preserve the Palo Alto Baylands, specifically the Duck Pond Area - Loop Trail, adjacent slough and lagoon.
Dear Palo Alto City Council Members.
I respectively submit this survey to you for your consideration when deciding the Palo Alto Airport's request to expand, specifically longer, wider runways, which according to their Alternatives #4 and #5 "would significantly fill up the Duck Pond area.
There are 361 signatures, gathered between May 31 through August 16, 2024. The majority of the signatures were gathered at the Palo Alto Baylands, over the course of 2-3 days per week.
The signatures on this petition represent people who want to see the Duck Pond area at the Palo Alto Baylands remain intact as it is, along with the rest of the preserve. The DO NOT want the Palo Alto Airport to expand in any way into the preserve.
People shared with this me so many stories about this area:
One older gentleman, Jose, walks around the pond each day to obtain peace and tranquility while undergoing cancer treatments at Stanford Hospital.
Many, many stories are of parents sharing this area with their children, recalling when they were brought to the preserve as children.
Many, many grandparents bring their very young grandchildren here, as they care for them during the week to help their children out with daycare.
Many, many birders never tire of seeing the abundance of birds in this area, especially in late summer through early spring; what joy.
Many adult caregivers bring their elderly clients to the Duck Pond as it is so pleasurable to sit and watch and wonderfully accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.
In addition you will see cities in Canada, Georgia, Oregon, Shanghai (!), Dalian, China(!), as well as closer by Menlo Park, Atherton, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Mountain, View, East Palo Alto, Redwood City, Woodside, San Jose, Berkley and more listed. All places people have come from to visit this special place.
Dollars and cents cannot measure the value of the Palo Alto Baylands, Duck Pond and its surrounding area.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Diane McCoy
