Dear Palo Alto City Councilmembers,
First, I want to thank you for your service to our town. Holding elected office is not an easy job, and you do it with grace and care. Thank you.
I am writing to you today about the current applicant pool for the Human Relations Commission. The HRC’s mandate is to advance equity, inclusion, and justice in Palo Alto.
HRC members must believe unreservedly in the humanity of every person residing in Palo Alto, regardless of ethnic background, gender expression, socioeconomic status, or any other demographic marker.
I strongly support my good friend Mare Lucas. I’ve watched her serve our community the entire time she’s lived here. Her youngest and my oldest kids grew up together. I supported Mare as she processed the grief of losing her oldest child to suicide, and I watched her bring the community together by going public with her family’s tragedy. She has helped de- stigmatize suicide in our community. I’m sure she would continue to bring clarity, openness, and empathy to her role on the HRC.
I also strongly support Salwa Ansari. She helped run the Iftar that brought our whole community together in a beautiful display of harmony and understanding. She would bring representation of the Muslim community to our town on a commission where it would be welcomed and helpful.
I am concerned about Joshua Lory, who has made anti-trans comments that show a basic disrespect for transgender residents. (Screenshots attached).
Thank you for your service to Palo Alto.
