FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
October 4–10, 2026
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in, working in, and visiting the community; and
WHEREAS, lithium-ion battery fires remain a serious and growing hazard, primarily caused by thermal runaway, a chain reaction triggered by damage, overcharging, or manufacturing defects, with micromobility devices such as ebikes, scooters, laptops, and cellphones frequently involved; and WHEREAS, all household members should develop and practice a home fire safety and escape plan that includes:
buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely; having two exits from every room in the home with a path to the outside from exits; installing smoke alarms in all required locations; and designating a meeting place outside where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto Fire Department first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and education; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto residents are encouraged to participate in public education measures, so that they can take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto's 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charged Up, Safely,” effectively serves to educate the public, including the many residents who rely on e-bikes, scooters, and other micromobility devices, about simple but important charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires, keeping themselves and those around them safe.

NOW, THEREFORE I, Vicki Veenker, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim October 4–10, 2026 as Fire Prevention Week in the City of Palo Alto, and urge all community members to participate in the public safety activities and efforts of the City of Palo Alto Fire and Emergency Services Departments during Fire Prevention Week.
