ON-STREET DINING DESIGN GUIDELINES
December 8, 2021
Cohesive Design & Materials
• Outdoor dining facilities should be designed so that all the components of the dining units work together as a well-designed, comprehensive whole.
Similar materials should be used throughout the design. This includes (but is not limited to) shading/screening devices, exterior lights (including the light supports), and planters.
High-Quality Appearance
• Off-the-shelf elements should not be used (e.g., raffia panels, Astroturf, lattice panels, easy-ups, etc). Use of umbrellas as part of a cohesive design is allowed. • The design of the units should be high quality, simple, uncluttered and present a sense of permanence even though they must be easily removable.
Platforms & Lighting
• Dining areas should have a platform aligned with the sidewalk to provide an attractive ground surface and meet ADA requirements without the need for ramps.
• Exterior lighting should be battery or solar powered to eliminate the need for exterior wiring.
• External wiring (power) should not extend across the sidewalk (right-of-way).
