Good afternoon city council members,
My name is Jennifer Jimenez and I have been a a Pasadena resident for 27 years. I've been in this community for my entire life and it super important that we appoint the right candidate for district 3. I would like Brandon Lamar to be appointed for district 3 council member. I believe he is the right fit to represent our people and our community. He's the only candidate that has been in the community by being involved with our youth and neighbors. Most candidates do not do this and don't care about their own community but he genuinely does. He will lead us and our future generation in the right direction. I really hope you consider him being the next council member for district 3.

Best,
Jennifer Jimenez

Good afternoon,
Good afternoon council members,
My name is Christopher Silva, I have been a pasadena resident all 20 years of my life and whilst going to college I've decided to commute to UCLA because I love to see the progressive changes in our lovely city. I strongly believe that Brandon could possibly bring the change for the rising generations and perspective necessary to put all the desired changes into motion. Thank you for taking your time to read and listening to the people of our community.

Hi,
My name is Brigitte Rooney, I am a resident of District 1, but I live right across the street from District 3 and many of my friends and colleagues live in District 3. I am writing to express my support for Brandon Lamar to fill the District 3 City Council seat and my concern for the other nominees. Brandon has shown lifelong commitment to Pasadena and the community, and in particular District 3. He has shown persistent willingness and dedication to serve over and over.

Brandon is the only candidate who bothered running for the council seat in the June election, passionate enough to challenge an incumbent and not just opportunistically fill the vacancy created by John Kennedy's death. During Brandon's campaign he personally knocked on hundreds of doors and talked to hundreds of constituents. He has spent nearly the last year in constant communication with District 3 residents on the issues that concern them, in addition to his years of service as part of many and varied youth groups, community groups, commissions, and boards managing million dollar grants. Brandon is the only candidate that has shown commitment to ongoing service and willingness to serve full terms on City Council, not just fill short term vacancies.

Brandon ended up with over 1,000 votes from District 3 and 41% of the total vote with a meager $6,209 - against John Kennedy, the incumbent of 10 years who outspent Brandon 50 to 1. Brandon's campaign funding was 90% donations from individuals who gave under $500. Kennedy's funding came from lots of corporations, of which many single-handedly were greater than the entirety of Brandon's funding. If this does not show real community support for Brandon, I don't know what will.

In a city where every 1 in 2 residents are renters, it's high time there is some tenant representation on the City Council. No one would understand the issues facing this 50% of Pasadena population more than Brandon.

Brandon Lamar is clearly the most qualified candidate for District 3 Councilmember.

Regarding Justin Jones, he only registered to vote in District 3 as August, a month *after* the death of John Kennedy left a vacancy. This makes me very suspicious of his qualifications to serve as District 3 Councilmember, and very concerned about his true intentions of wanting the seat.

Regarding Lucious Smith, I am deeply concerned that he is being considered for appointment. I've seen some of his sermons online. They are wrought with misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic comments and attacks on autonomy and personal freedoms. I cannot see how he could faithfully represent the constituents of District 3 which I can guarantee include women, gay residents, and trans residents. In 2014, Pasadena suspended the then-director of the public health department, Dr. Eric Walsh, for homophobic comments. Dr.

Walsh ended up resigning. If the city can suspend the health department director for homophobic comments, should you really consider another homophobe for City Council? How can a homophobe represent and serve his constituents without baseline respect for their marriages, families, bodily autonomy, and personal freedoms? 09/29/2022

Hi,
My name is Ashay Patel, I am a resident of District 1, though just across the street from District 3.

I am emailing to state my support for Brandon Lamar to fill the District 3 City Council vacant seat.

Brandon Lamar is a valued community member and leader, and this was made clear to me during his election campaign this past June. Brandon ran with the intent of being on City Council for the long term, faithfully representing his constituents and working to improve issues that matter to them and the city as a whole.

During Brandon Lamar's campaign, he personally knocked on hundreds of doors, spoke to the residents of District 3, and ultimately managed to earn 40% of the vote against John Kennedy, an established incumbent.

Brandon's campaign was people powered and it shows, as most of Brandon's donations were small and came from individuals rather than large corporations.

People are right to be skeptical of an appointment process to city council, but for this process to have any semblance of democracy, Brandon is the clear choice to fill this vacancy as a long term resident of Pasadena and District 3 who has put in the work to serve his constituents well.

Finally, 50% of Pasadena residents are renters. If appointed, Brandon Lamar would be the only tenant on the City Council. It is high time Pasadena renters are represented in the city government.

Best,

Dear Pasadena City Council:

My name is Crystal Aceves, and I am the owner of DerWolf, a restaurant, and bar in Old Town Pasadena. I am writing this email because I support Brandon D. Lamar's petition to run for District 3 City Council. have known Brandon D. Lamar for over three vears, and he reached out as a member of the Human Relation ammission in Pasadena. I was impressed with how Mr. Lamar listened thoughtfully to both the grievances an solutions I provided.

In addition, I love the fact that Mr. Lamar is avidly involved in organizations that support marginalized communities and their businesses. As a Latina woman, who is young, it has been tough to carry a business in the City of Pasadena. With someone like Brandon D. Lamar as a City Council Member for District 3, I know that District 3, including my business and customers, is in good hands.

Cordially,

Dear Pasadena City Council:

My name is Jose Silverio and my family of four and I are currently living in District 3. I am writing this email because I support Brandon D. Lamar's petition to run for District 3 City Council.

I have known Brandon since 2019 and have run into him at several community events. He is friendly and a known face with a lot of knowledge about the issues in the community because he's not afraid of meeting people where they are.

He is also a part of committees that support young people. As a 25-year-old father and provider too busy to attend meetings and get involved in the community at that level, I feel grateful to have a representative like Brandon who already listens to and supports his neighbors.

Thank you for your time,
Jose Silverio

Dear Mayor Gordo & Members of the City Council:

Please accept this note of support for the candidacy for Brandon Lamar for the appointment to the District 3 opening on the Pasadena City Council due to the passing of Hon. John J. Kennedy. Brandon is a Pasadena native who has lived and worked in the city for the bulk of his career.

He is deeply rooted in our community and serves in a multitude of organizations that support a broad cross section of constituencies, including but not limited to:
• Co-Chairman of Pasadenans Organized for Progress;
• Past Chairman, Pasadena Human Relations Commission;
• Board Member, Black Los Angeles Young Democrats;
• Board Member, Pasadena NAACP;
• Harambee Ministries; and
• DayOne.

Additionally, Brandon has been active, consistent, and involved in speaking out on issues that affect residents in District 3. He has been a champion for affordable housing, community police oversight and youth development to name a few.

The future of Pasadena should be developed by someone who will benefit from the policy decisions made now that will impact residents of our city in the next 20+ years. Brandon Lamar is the future of Pasadena. He has a keen eye and a lived experience that is not currently represented on the City Council. Brandon's collaborative leadership style and community engagement will be assets to the Council. He also has the trust and confidence of District 3 voters, having received 41% of the electorate in the June 2022 primary election. Brandon is ballot-tested and poised to serve the residents of District 3.

I know that your decision is difficult and you are faced with qualified applications to fill this vacancy. However, I do believe that Brandon Lamar is the best person to fill the current District 3 vacancy. I urge you to vote for Brandon Lamar to represent Council District 3.

Sincerely,
Patrice Marshall McKenzie

Dear Mayor Victor Gordo and Members of the City Council, I have been honored to know and work closely with Brandon Lamar in several contexts in the past two years. I have seen his love for the community and his passion for the people of Pasadena. He has lived here all his life and he has been extraordinarily involved in the city for man of his age. He has invested himself in learning about the complex challenges and needs of the city and has been supported my many people who have felt like the city has forgotten about them.

It has been my privilege, as the President of the Democrats of Pasadena Foothills, to have Brandon's involvement in advancing many creative solutions in our region and across the State of California.

I currently live in District 6 but District 3 was my home when I first moved to Pasadena over 8 years ago. In 2017 I was forced out of my apartment with a no-fault, 60-day notice. The landlord wanted to double the rent, he told me. Since 2020 I have been a City Commissioner on the Northwest Commission where I have been able to continue my work for the community I came to love in those early days of living in Pasadena.

I believe Brandon perfectly meets the needs of District 3 and the entire city of Pasadena at this time. When Brandon ran for City Council in District 3 he garnered 41% of the vote in spite of facing a Goliath of a community leader in the person of the late John Kennedy. He always expressed to me how he didn't have anything against Mr. Kennedy. He just felt it was time for a new voice...a younger voice...a tenant voice, on city council.

That is the kind of maturity and seriousness that we need in Pasadena and I and wholeheartedly encourage you to support him by appointing him to the late Mr. Kennedy's seat in District 3.

Sincerely,
Ryan Bell
Pasadena resident, District 6

CITY OF PASADENA www.ppaction.org/ppadvocates
Act. No matter what.

Planned Parenthood Advocates Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley September 28, 2022
Dear Honorable Mayor and Members of the Pasadena City Council, I write to you on behalf of Planned Parenthood Advocates Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley (PP Advocates), a 501 c(4) advocacy and political organization working to protect and expand access to reproductive health care and sex education in Pasadena and throughout the San Gabriel Valley. One way PP Advocates' achieves our mission is by supporting political candidates who are champions for sexual and reproductive healthcare and advocates for ALL members of our community.

The tragic passing of Councilmember John Kennedy is a huge loss for the entire City of Pasadena. During this difficult time, it is your responsibility to appoint a successor in the most fair and democratic manner possible. The residents of District 3 should have a Councilmember who values inclusion, diversity, and equity. As such, it is critical that you do not consider any candidate who has a demonstrated history of homophobia and transphobia. Prejudice against those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer has no place in Pasadena. The City has openly declared this aspiration on many occasions and most recently during PRIDE month where the Mayor and members of the City Council celebrated our LGBTQ+ community on the steps of Pasadena City Hall. PP Advocates understands that homophobia and transphobia contribute to disparities in health care and has detrimental impacts on the well-being of LGBTQ+ community members. A person holding such prejudices and phobias, whether motivated by personal, spiritual or religious beliefs, should not be appointed to public service by an elected body of government.

In preparation for the June 2022 primary election, PP Advocates interviewed and voted to endorse Mr. Brandon Lamar to represent District 3. Mr. Lamar shares Planned Parenthood values and priorities and understands the importance of championing policies that will benefit all the residents of District 3, and all of the residents of Pasadena.

We found Mr. Lamar to be a powerful community leader with an impressive record of local advocacy. He is passionate about Pasadena and sensitive to the needs of District 3. 09/29/2022
Item 3
A significant number of residents voted for Mr. Lamar at the polls in June. They deserve to have a councilmember that has earned their widespread support at the ballot box.

In these times of loss and uncertainty, it is more important than ever before for elected leaders to be unifiers that promote understanding, as well as dignity and respect for all people. PP Advocates stands with the people of District 3 and urges you to appoint Brandon Lamar to represent them.

Sincerely,
Glengin

I have been a resident and tenant in District 3 for the last seven years. As a young professional who works and lives in Pasadena, I've experienced a lot of joys and privilege of living so close to where I work. Over the last three years, l've also come to intimately understand that many people cannot afford this privilege. In the summer of 2018, a new landlord forced me and 28 of my neighbors out of our building when they purchased it. The new owners had no ties to Pasadena and were real estate developers in Hollywood who had a history of flipping buildings in LA. They displaced a retired war veteran who lived on disability, a Black single father raising two kids one of whom had a developmental disability, a Latina mother and PCC nursing student, a three-generation Latinx household, a survivor of intimate partner violence, and a teacher's aide who worked at Long Fellow and lived at home with her parents and sister. Through our fight to stay in our homes, we all got to know each other's stories. Following the displacement, many of my neighbors left the district, some leaving Pasadena and their community networks altogether.

Having experienced their heartbreak and struggle to protect their homes, I am convinced that the right person to represent the many tenant families in District 3 is Brandon Lamar. He understands the tenant struggle first-hand and has been a vocal advocate for renters - voices that have never been taken seriously even when we give tearful public comment, begging the council to save our families from displacement. Brandon Lamar is the right candidate and I strongly urge you to make the right choice in appointing him to the District 3 seat.

Best regards,
Dan Huynh

Hello,
The people of District 3 made their voices heard through the votes. John Kennedy won and Brandon Lamar held 2nd place. District 3 spoke with 41% of their voices said that Brandon Lamar was their choice for a leader.

He stood up and ran in an unpopular race against the giant known as John Kennedy. Even John called Brandon a good guy and John said at his victory celebration that Brandon ran a clean race and showed dignity.

The voices of District 3 MUST be respected and place their 2nd choice to represent them - Brandon Lamar, Councilmember, District 3.

It is unfortunate that we are here with this discussion, but in John Kennedy's own way, he has exposed a gap that must be filled. If the Council appoints someone against the will and vibe of the people for District 3, it is time for the whole City to rise up and change the laws and the people who vowed to carry out the voices of the people.

We believed in each of you to represent the Whole City - as many members of ONE body - the City of Pasadena. Your vote and appointment of Brandon Lamar will reconfirm your vow to all Pasadena residents.

Let your vote be your bond. My Grandfather said, "A man only has his word. When he's lost that, he's lost everything!" Can we take you at your word? I believe we can with the placement of Brandon Lamar as the District 3 Councilmember - chosen by the People for the People.

Sincerely,
Rita Turner
