To the City Council:

I am a 15-year resident of District 3 writing to express my enthusiastic support for Brandon Lamar to be appointed to the city council to fill the next term left vacant by Mr. Kennedy's death.

Brandon Lamar is exactly the kind of leader we need for District 3: his ongoing work as Chair of Pasadena's Human Relations Commission and on the boards of Pasadena NAACP, Pasadena Organizing for Progress, Leadership Pasadena, and Black Los Angeles Young Democrats demonstrate his commitment to serving the community. His advocacy for rent control and eviction protections similarly show his advocacy for the actual people of the district, instead of just business interests. He is focused on the community's concerns of affordable housing, safety, and homelessness. He is a young man devoting himself to the betterment of our community.

The mayor has characterized Mr. Lamar's unsuccessful bid for the council seat against Mr. Kennedy as a loss that somehow disqualifies him from being appointed to the seat - but getting 41% of the vote against a popular incumbent is no small feat and a very impressive showing of public support. This incumbent versus up-and-coming-leader is not the choice we have today: today we have a choice between Mr. Lamar who has received 1081 District 3 votes this year and Mr. Jones who has received exactly ZERO.

I agree with the city council that Pasadena could really benefit from Mr. Jones' engineering and water expertise, and I sincerely hope that he applies for a job at Pasadena Water and Power where that can be most effective.

Sincerely,
Dawn Burkhardt
District 3 resident and voter

Hello,
As a proud lifelong member of District 3, I can not think of a better person to represent our community than Brandon Lamar. He has shown through his perseverance, resilience and never ending commitment that he is more than qualified for the role of city council. I have witnessed him be a role model both in and outside of his community. He is not only passionate about seeing the community flourish as a whole, but he is interested in watering and developing the lives of individuals in the community.

Mr. Lamar is a true example to the members of District 3. He exemplifies an impeccable balance of grace and strength that l believe is needed in governmental roles. As an aspiring attorney, I am familiar with how the law and governmental procedures can weigh on a person both mentally and physically and I believe that Mr. Lamar has the emotional intelligence to execute this position in an effective manner.

It is with great pleasure that I type the aforementioned words of recommendation for Mr. Brandon Lamar and I hope that the city takes the word of its citizens into account when making such a monumental decision.

Sincerely,

Hello,
My name is Ashay Patel and l am a resident of District 1, right across the street from District 3.

I am writing this email to state my support for Brandon Lamar to fill the vacant District 3 City Council seat.

Brandon Lamar ran a campaign against Kennedy, a popular incumbent who outspent him by several orders of magnitude, and he managed to win over 40% of the vote in that election. He would be the only candidate to earn actual votes from District 3 residents.

Furthermore, Brandon Lamar has been the only nominee who is a vocal supporter of rent control. District 3 contained the largest proportion of voters who voted YES on Measure H this past November, with nearly 70% voting in favor, larger than any other city council district. A total of 6580 people from District 3 voted in the general election, nearly three times the number of voters who voted in the June primary.

With over half of Pasadenans renting their housing, Brandon Lamar would be the only City Council member who is a renter. Pasadena renters deserve representation on the City Council and Brandon Lamar, with his decade of public service and nonprofit work and his people-powered attitude is an ideal candidate to fill this vacancy.

We all remember when members of the City Council cited private conversations with influential individuals as important to their decision-making during the last City Council meeting. I sure hope for the sake of the city that this time around, the City Council ensures that all people have a voice in this process, not just those with wealth and influence. Do the right thing, and appoint Brandon Lamar.

Best,

Dear Mayor Victor Gordo and Members of the City Council, I have been honored to know and work closely with Brandon Lamar over the past two years. I have seen his love for the community and his passion for the people of Pasadena. He has lived here all his life and he has been extraordinarily involved in the city for man of his age. He has invested himself in learning about the complex challenges and needs of the city and has been supported my many people who have felt like the city has forgotten about them.

It has been my privilege, as the President of the Democrats of Pasadena Foothills, to have Brandon's involvement in advancing many creative solutions in our region and across the State of California.

I currently live in District 6 but District 3 was my home when I first moved to Pasadena over 8 years ago. In 2017 I was forced out of my apartment with a no-fault, 60-day eviction notice. The landlord wanted to double the rent, he told me.

Since 2020 I have been a City Commissioner on the Northwest Commission where I have been able to continue my work for the community I came to love in those early days of living in Pasadena.

I believe Brandon perfectly meets the needs of District 3 and the entire city of Pasadena at this time. When Brandon ran for City Council in District 3 he garnered 41% of the vote in spite of facing a Goliath of a community leader in the person of the late John Kennedy. He always expressed to me how he didn't have anything against Mr. Kennedy. He just felt it was time for a new voice...a younger voice...a tenant voice, on city council.

That is the kind of maturity and seriousness that we need in Pasadena and I and wholeheartedly encourage you to support him by appointing him to the District 3 seat.

Sincerely,
Ryan Bell

CITY CLERK

CITY OF PASADENA
Pasadena, CA 91103
My name is Beverly Bogar and I am a resident of District 3. I support Brandon Lamar and I like others strongly advocate for his appointment to fill the vacant Council seat in District 3.

Mr. Lamar was raised and educated in Pasadena. He has been interested and concerned about our city even as a young person and participated in many of Pasadena's youth programs. He is engaged in the community, District 3 and accessible to residents in and outside of District 3. He is involved and concerned with many of our city issues particularly pertaining to affordable housing, homelessness and public safety.

His public and community service has shown his tireless leadership, commitment, accountability, and a desire to make a difference. He is an advisor for Day One, involved with La Pinteresca Teen Center, Parks in the Dark, and other local youth programs. He served as Human Relations Commission, NAACP Executive Board, Black Los Angeles Young Democrats, and Pasadena Organizing for Progress, advocate for housing, to mention a few.

Finally, as indicated in my prior email, the selection process was not only flawed on numerous levels, it lacked transparency. It was evident during the initial selection process, there was immense support from District 3 residents for Brandon Lamar via their emails, letters, and phone calls. True enough, others district residents also sent in their support for Mr. Lamar because it was not clarified in the initial request for input.

So, I urge you to appoint Mr. Brandon Lamar to represent District 3, the community and our city.

Respectfully,
12/15/2022

Good morning,
I am writing in support of Brandon Lamar, and I want the City Council to appoint Brandon Lamar to the District 3 City Council seat. I live and vote in District 3. Mr. Lamar is an amazing public servant working for issues that he genuinely cares about on behalf of the community on the NAACP, Human Relations Commission, and Pasadena's Organizing for Progress, among others.

He shows he cares for the residents of District 3 by campaigning for measure Hand addressing issues of affordability, housing, and safety.

Most importantly, he is from District 3 and wants to represent the voters in District 3! -not the interests of the Pasadena political and financial establishment.

I fully support Brandon Lamar. Make the right choice as you also represent Pasadena and appoint Brandon Lamar as the District 3 City Councilmember.

Again I am asking you to do what is right not because it is popular or because you fear repercussions, but because it is right.

Your selection of the next councilor of District 3 should be based on the clear want for Brandon Lamar to represent them and the district. You as a body should not be deciding what is best for people who are capable of deciding themselves and who have already expressed who they want to represent them. This is not about whether Brandon Lamar is the most qualified, which he is, or about whether he fits with the rest of council. This is about not disregarding the many voices from district three who want Brandon to represent them. Who care enough to write you letters and to call into city council on a weekday night, to tell you that Brandon Lamar is the council member they want. Doing the right thing in this case is simply listening to District 3 and voting in alignment with their wishes. Do not use the process to try and advance your own selfish ambition. A process that is already flawed and undemocratic. Don't take advantage of a flawed system, Do the right thing.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am a former resident of Pasadena, and have known Brandon Lamar since 2018.

He currently serves as my church's Executive Pastor and has always exercised the utmost trust and intuitiveness to serve his community in the best way possible.

I personally have always admired his wisdom beyond his age. He is very mature and offers sound advice to those younger and older than himself.

I have no doubt Brandon is the man to represent the District of Pasadena and urge you to put him in position to make significant change in Pasadena.

All the best and Happy Holidays,

Dear Mayor and City Council,

CITY CLERK
I am a senior and resident of District 3. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my vote and DENA vision for my community and district. I am writing to strongly advocate for the appointment of Brandon Lamar to District 3. Brandon has been such a huge support for seniors like me. I'm advocating for him because he has made sure that even the seniors in our community voices are heard. Brandon comes by the Pasadena Senior Center and Jackie Robinson Center just to check on us. It is evident, he has a true leader's heart.

Brandon represents me and my values. He is a candidate who has:
• Established deep ties with the city that can be traced from his years of leadership with the NAACP Pasadena Branch, POP!, and assisting many other local organizations. • Advocated for Measure H - which passed with 69% of the vote in District 3! (Even though Measure H wasn't a choice of many City Council members, he still stood for what he believed in.
• Received so much support from District 3 residents in the previous appointment.

I think it is also good to note how respectful and professional in his race against Mr.

Kennedy. Before the passing of Mr. Kennedy, he acknowledged Brandon for the amazing person he was and the campaign he ran.

Please protect this special appointment process from further disenfranchising Pasadena residents. I strongly urge you to support my community and District 3 by appointing Brandon (Please note: you will receive a common letter from other seniors but we share the same sentiments.)
Sincerely,
Esther V.

Dear Pasadena City Councilmembers and Mayor Gordo,
I am writing in support of Brandon D. Lamar to fill the term for Pasadena City Council. As a community representative I have been active for years in the council area of Northwest Pasadena.

Brandon has been of immense aid to me in helping to meet the needs of local community members.

I find Brandon a resource in my efforts to serve the community, answer questions, and find services. It makes sense to formalize the service Brandon carries out for the community everyday with an appointment to the Pasadena City Council.

I am sure you will do the right thing by appointing a true servant of the people to take his place as your colleague in City Hall.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Dear Mayor Gordo and members of the Pasadena City Council, As a resident of Council District 3, I would like to ask you to appoint Brandon Lamar as our representative. Brandon received a great out pouring of support from District 3 residents both in the last election and during the previous appointment process. It seems very clear that he is the people's choice for this position. Brandon will bring a new voice to the council, the voice of those of us who are renters, not homeowners. Since we are currently the majority of residents in Pasadena, it is past time that we have representation on the council. Renters face a whole range of problems and issues that do not affect home owners. The passage of Measure His a start in addressing these issues, but much work remains and I am confident Brandon will represent us well.

Thank you for your consideration,

Dear City of Pasadena Correspondence,
I am writing this email on behalf of Brandon Lamar in support of his being the right candidate to represent District 3. He has been a long time active Pasadena resident, who has changed many lives of the both young and mature citizens through his employment and volunteer work. He makes himself available to handle big and small situations that most people would not even consider taking on. When Brandon Lamar shows up you can best believe he is bringing his strong ethics and never give up values to the table. He is a man of his word and can be trusted to properly and professionally execute the responsibilities that come with representing District 3.

Re: Special City Council Meeting Dec. 14, 2022
Honorable Council Members,
Please take to heart your task of appointing someone to represent District 3 on the council given that there will be no election process.

Just look at District 3's voting on Measure H this past November. What more do you need to know? District 3 wants someone who will be their champion. More than 60% of the residents are renters and over 69% of the D3 electorate voted for Measure H.

Your choice must be credible to that community to be credible yourselves as members of a democratic legislative group.

I urge you to appoint Brandon Lamar to represent District 3 on the Pasadena City Council.

Further I urge you all to self-assess personal motivations and guard individually and carefully against claiming to know what is best for the residents of District 3. They have voted for Brandon.

Thank you.

In my most authentic opinion, Brandon D. Lamar is the only candidate worthy of consideration to represent District 3. I met Brandon at around 17 years old, and he already exhibited the qualities of a faithful leader, a community advocate and public servant. Since my first impression, Brandon has never waned from the qualities I saw in him that day. He has only matured, and grown in his commitment to public service. Aside from the obvious supporting evidence that recognizes Brandon as the only competitor to the honorable John Kennedy in the recent election for Council Member, Brandon is an invaluable asset to the Pasadena community. He generously gives of his time, his energy, his resources, relationships, and is an example of what it means to walk this Earth as a Servant-Leader. It is true that I am a friend to Brandon Lamar, but this only makes my testimony more valid. I have never been one to put my word behind anything I can not stand on. If there is another reasonable option, l am oblivious to the reasoning behind it. I want what's best for this community, and I believe Brandon is exactly that.

Thank you for your time.

Hello,
My name is Brigitte Rooney, I am a resident of District 1, and I live right across the street from District 3 and many of my friends and colleagues live in District 3. I am writing to express my support of the appointment of Brandon Lamar to District 3 City Council. Brandon has shown lifelong commitment to Pasadena and the community, and in particular D3. He has shown persistent willingness and dedication to serve over and over.

Brandon is the only candidate who bothered running for the council seat in the June election, passionate enough to challenge an incumbent. During Brandon's campaign he personally knocked on hundreds of doors and talked to hundreds of constituents. He has spent nearly the last year in constant communication with D3 residents on the issues that concern them, in addition to his years of service as part of many and varied youth groups, community groups, commissions, and boards managing million dollar grants. Brandon has shown commitment to ongoing service and willingness to serve full terms on City Council, not just fill short term vacancies.

Brandon ended up with over 1,000 votes from District 3 and 41% of the total vote with a meager $6,209 - against John Kennedy, the incumbent of 10 years who outspent Brandon 50 to 1. Brandon's campaign funding was 90% donations from individuals who gave under $500. Kennedy's funding came from lots of corporations, of which many single-handedly were greater than the entirety of Brandon's funding. This shows immense community support.

In a city where every 1 in 2 residents are renters, it's high time there is some tenant representation on the City Council.

Nearly 70% of District 3 voted in favor of Measure H (rent control and eviction protections)- an idea that former D3 Councilmember John Kennedy called a "well-intentioned bad idea." It is clear that the city needs someone in touch with renters. No one would understand the issues facing this 50% of Pasadena population more than Brandon.

Brandon Lamar is clearly the most qualified candidate for District 3 Councilmember.

Thank you for your consideration,
Brigitte

Dear Mayor and City Council,
My name is Dan and I have been a resident of District 3 for the last seven years. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my vote and vision for my community and district. I am writing to strongly advocate for the appointment of Brandon Lamar to the city council seat for District 3.

I voted for Brandon this Spring and I continue to push for his appointment and here's why: Brandon represents me and my values. He is a candidate who has:
• - Established and deep ties with the city that can be traced from his years of leadership with the NAACP Pasadena Branch.
• - Advocated for renters by knocking on doors for Measure H - which passed with 69% of the vote in District 3!
• - Won 40% of the District's vote in his first ever city council election campaign, no other candidate for District 3 has this record
Please protect this special appointment process from further disenfranchising Pasadena residents. I strongly urge you to support the will of my community and District 3 by appointing Brandon Lamar.

Dear city council members,
I am a resident of district 1, but I live right on the border so district 3 is across the street from my house. I am also a tenant, a steering committee member of the rent control campaign, and a proud Pasadena Tenants Union member. I am writing in support of Brandon Lamar's appointment to the late councilmember Kennedy's seat for council district 3.

Brandon is the only candidate who has been a vocal and active supporter of tenants rights, including Measure H for rent control and eviction protections. I had the opportunity to work with him during the campaign for Measure Hand witnessed his close ties to the community in his district, and his commitment to listening attentively to the needs of ALL of his neighbors. When I was knocking doors a couple of months ago in Brandon's apartment building, his neighbors told me that l didn't need to explain the rent control measure because Brandon was already talking to them about it. When you rent, you have to move a lot, and that makes it hard to keep strong community ties, especially with immediate neighbors who cycle in and out. But Brandon has put in the effort to stay rooted.

A look at the most recent election results shows that 69.17% of CD3 voters approved rent control. This is the largest margin of "Yes" votes of any district in the city. In raw numbers this represents 4209 votes. This is more than double the number of people who voted to elect John Kennedy in the June primary. The election results show that Brandon is in touch with the electorate on the housing issue, which is one of the most pressing issues our city faces today.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jane Panangaden

Hello Mayor and City Council,
This email is to support the appointment of Brandon D. Lamar to represent District 3 on the Pasadena City Council. The work that Brandon has done as a community organizer has been nothing short of amazing. He has worked on local initiatives such as advocating for the Police Oversight Commission and Measure H which recently passed.

I must also mention that 1 am displeased at how much has been done to try to discredit and degrade these young black males who are trying to make a difference in their community. The community is listening and is aware of the divisive conversations that are not beneficial to anyone, especially District 3.

Mayor Gordo and City Council it is my hope that all of you support and uplift both of these young black men who are still growing and developing in Pasadena. We are watching and all of you have the opportunity to change the narrative and stereotypes.

Yes, my preference is Brandon Lamar but beyond this appointment, we must respect both individuals' past, presents, and future. Our community depends on it.

With Respect,

Good morning,
My name is John Williams and my wife Tina Williams and I are writing in support of Brandon Lamar for the appointment to represent District 3 as a City council member. We believe that Mr. Lamar is the best person to represent District 3. He is a person full of integrity, who strives to represent all of the residents in his district and not just those who own homes. He has served the city at many different levels, including but not limited to city appointed committees and various non-profits including Leadership Pasadena and NAACP. He was born and raised in Pasadena and knows the city well.
