8. What specifically in your background, training, education, or interests qualifies you as an appointee?
Personal: I was born and raised in the City of Pasadena. I come from modest means: my father was a small business owner, and my mother was a homemaker.
My family has been a staple in the Pasadena community, starting with a successful family business: Woods and Valentine's Mortuary. I received my education from Pasadena Public Schools; I played three years of varsity football for Pasadena High School. My first job was a rose program intern with the City of Pasadena Water and Power; and my second job was an engineering intern, during summer and winter breaks, with the Department of Public Works
Civic Engagement: Currently, I represent District 3 on the Pasadena City Council.
Prior to serving on the Council, I served on and chaired two commissions in the City of Pasadena: I had the privilege to represent District 3 on the Human Relations Commission; and serve as on the Environmental Advisory Commission. I was asked and appointed by city staff to serve on the Stakeholder Technical Advisory Group for the Power Integrated Resource Plan; and I've collaborated with numerous City of Pasadena Departments: Parks, Recreation and Community Service, Police, Public Works and Water and Power in my role as councilmember, commissioner, and private citizen. During the Safer at Home Order, I partnered with STEAMCODERS to provide free math tutoring services to students who were falling behind during distance learning.
Public Service: I am a licensed Civil Engineer who works for the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works. My recent focus is to help administer the Safe, Clean Water Program, which most refer to as Measure W. The City of Pasadena is a complex municipal enterprise, that strives to provide outstanding services to our residents, and professionally I've done this my entire career with the public sector.
Representation: I am the only licensed Civil Engineer serving as a Pasadena City Councilmember. I add to the diverse professional representation on the Council and leaned on my community, municipal and technical background to collaborate with my colleagues on the City Council.
9. What do you see as the objectives and goals of the City Council?
1. The City of Pasadena's objectives and goals are clearly defined in our mission statement: "The City of Pasadena is dedicated to delivering exemplary municipal services responsive to our entire community and consistent with our history, culture and unique character." In addition to the stated mission, the City Council represents and listens to all the citizens; and sets policy and strategic direction for the city to become more inclusive.
10. How would you help achieve these objectives and goals? What special qualities would you bring?
My experience as the current City Councilmember will help me continue to achieve these objectives and goals. I have participated in Council and Committee meetings, hosted community meetings and have experience with items the Council regularly discusses - specific plans and development projects, water conservation and environmental stewardship, affordable housing, and social equity. My experience as the current Councilmember will allow me to continue representing and serving our neighbors in District 3.
