Dear City Council,
My name is Jon Mabuni and I am a Pasadena resident in District 5. I am writing to urge the city to take clear & directed steps towards reopening a bad weather shelter for our unhoused neighbors. Until one is opened, 1 also urge the expansion of the motel voucher program and an increase in funding for the PORT program.
Our city, along with others across the nation, celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. As we know, Dr. King advocated against racism and inequality in the many forms it takes in our nation and around the world. This quote from his 1964 Nobel Lecture still rings true today: "Poverty is one of the most urgent items on the agenda of modern life. There is nothing new about poverty. What is new, however, is that we have the resources to get rid of it." Though much has changed since then, there is still significant work to be done to help our neighbors. In the spirit of this same work, rather than simply reacting in the aftermath of the significant storms we've been through in the past couple of weeks, I urge the city to be proactive in its approach towards addressing local needs related to shelter and housing so that folks aren't literally left out in the cold again.
Thank you,
Jon Mabuni
