Dear Municipal Services Committee Members and Mr. Jackson:
As the IRP process moves forward, in addition to the physical costs of procuring electricity, I respectfully request that PWP staff and consultants' chosen scenarios take into account the social cost of continuing to emit carbon through its power supply choices.
In a City Council meeting on January 30th, a 14-year-old student talked about the switch to catalytic converts in the '70s and how the costs of adding converters were dwarfed by the reduction in human healthcare costs.
The social cost of carbon is a real value that must be calculated and included in every scenario because the damages from continuing to emit carbon are real. We cannot ignore this important part of the equation. If we do so, the modeling will be flawed.
Climate change is a cost to all life on the planet. Please include the social costs of carbon as the IRP process moves forward with modeling.
Respectfully,
Laura Fleming
District 7 Resident
