RE: Item 4. UPDATE ON CITYWIDE SAFER STREET TRAFFIC SAFETY CAMPAIGN I walk every morning and observe traffic in the area. According to what I see, polite safety campaigns are not effective.

There are speed monitor signs on Alien Avenue between Monte Vista and Las Lunas. If the way is clear to the traffic light at Villa, southbound vehicles drive as fast as possible to get there, driving more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit of 35 mph. The only times that drivers seem to operate within the posted speed limit is when traffic is backed up so that they cannot go faster. This polite speed reminder seems to have minimal effect.

The marked pedestrian crosswalk on Orange Grove at Sierra Bonita is regularly ignored by drivers.

Vehicles southbound on Craig speed with little regard for pedestrians, in order to reach the traffic light before passing under the 210 freeway.

The timing for the "Pedestrian Walk" sign to cross Alien Avenue at Orange Grove is too short to comfortably cross the street, apparently because traffic flow on Alien Avenue is prioritized.

It appears to me that polite safety campaigns do not solve the problem. We need traffic enforcement, unpopular as it maybe.

Sincerely,
Genette Foster
Council District 2
