Re: Central Library Earthquake Retrofit
Dear Mayor Gordo and Members of the City Council,
Pasadena Heritage supports the recommendation of the Public Works Department and design team for the Central Library to adopt the sheer wall approach for seismic strengthening of this landmark building. We have followed this process closely, been pleased to have representatives serve on both the Pasadena Central Library Community Programming Committee and the Technical Oversight Committee, regularly attended those meetings, and toured the Library to see first-hand the conditions and challenges.
We have been impressed with the detailed analysis and evaluation of existing conditions and the original construction of the building and with the care and consideration given by the design team to the historic fabric of the National Register building.
We understand that the selection of a preferred seismic strengthening alternative will include the flexibility to adjust the methodology, if indicated, as further study and design development continues for all the various parts of the building and their relative needs and conditions.
