Dear Councilmembers Hampton, Rivas, Madison and Lyon:

First of all, huge congratulations to Dave Klug and the entire team on the award of this $1.5 million grant to support on-street dining! This is such a terrific accomplish ment and will be vital to the continuation and growth
of on-street dining in Pasadena.

As a member of the Board of Directors of the Playhouse Village Association and a property owner in Playhouse Village, I applaud the City’s embracing of the on-street dining program. The City moved quickly to support this program in the early stages of the Covid pandemic, and it certainly has been well received by the community and enabled our restaurants to make it through the Pandemic — with most of them in our Village being minority-owned small businesses.

Through a public-private partnership, we have built, paid for and installed several beautiful dining pavilions in Playhouse Village, designed by renowned architects Moule & Polyzoides. The Playhouse Village Foundation also participated in providing funding for this important project in order to create a thriving urban Playhouse Village in the heart of Pasadena.

The PVA worked very hard to come up with the funds to build the beautiful, new pavilions you see on C olorado
Boulevard, but now we are faced with significant costs to take down and reinstall the pavilions annually to accommodate the Rose Parade. Potential funding to cover these annual expenses will allow this program to continue, to grow and to thrive, and I believe that this is an expense for which the grant funds were intended: to support on-street dining.

I am writing to support approval of staff’s recommendation to receive the grant funds and to move forward as quickly as possible with expending the funds in order to sustain this vital program and to build upon our investment in Pasadena. The program’s sustainability is essential to our small restaurants.

Thank you,

Marjorie Lindbeck
Playhouse Village Association Board Member
Playhouse Village Foundation Vice-Chair
Property Owner 700 E. Union Street, Pasadena CA
