Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
Safety is ALWAYS appropriate.

I am a Pasadena resident who cares deeply about equity and the environment. I am writing to express support for All Ages & Abilities Greenways.

People walking and hiking in Pasadena deserve safe, comfortable spaces. We already have 50 north/south streets built to move cars. What we desperately need are a few streets that prioritize people. Drivers can still use these streets, too, but can easily keep speeds under 20 MPH on just four streets.

Most residents want to live on safe, quiet streets. In addition, we need to consider our vision for the city as a whole.

Pasadena needs a network of streets that are comfortable for people who don't drive a car, including people who are too young, too old, or too poor to drive. Plus, the climate emergency demands that we support affordable, low-carbon transportation.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends that ALL bicycle facilities follow the All Ages and Abilities guidelines.

Ignoring this national best practice would be a disservice to anyone who wants safe streets. Please take this step for a more livable, more vibrant, and more equitable Pasadena.

Thank you for everything you are doing for our city.

Sincerely,
Solvin Sigurdson

Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I am sending you this form because it all applies to me, and I would like to add—in my commute on residential streets that is 12 minutes long (less than 6 miles) from the southern edge ofAltadena to Lake Ave area, I have seen THREE awful crashes, two of which resulted in pedestrian/runner DEATHS in the last 3 years.

That is more horrible crashes that I've been so close to on my commute than the total number in the previous 30 years of my life, 25 of which were in other cities.

This is thus the worst city I have lived in (which includes San Francisco and Boston, both of which have very bad traffic) for residential street commuting.

Of course, these anecdotes are not statistics, but we all know the statistics match with my experience in Pasadena. I love it here, and this needs to change. Otherwise, we can't go on in good conscience like this as Pasadena residents.

Thank you.

Safety is ALWAYS appropriate.

Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I regularly bike commute to work (Caltech campus) and encourage you to take the recommended steps to improve bike commuting for all of us. I see more and more bikes on the streets, but the car drivers are so crazy it is scary out there.

Pasadena has plenty of street space for cars- using some of it for bikes is great for all! Thank you for everything you are doing for our city.

Dear Municipal Services Committee Members,
I am writing in support for All Ages and Abilities Greenways.

BikeLA, formerly the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, analyzed the 26 bicycle fatalities in 2022 and discovered four contributing factors in the deadly crashes including speed exceeding 35 mph and a lack of dedicated infrastructure for cyclists.

Safety is necessary if we are going to get people out of their cars. Many people in Pasadena are afraid to ride their bikes for fear of being hit and being either killed or injured. This is bad for the health of our residents and for the environment. Our climate action plan shows how transportation is one of the leading causes of local GHGs. It is important that we address this.

People walking and biking in Pasadena deserve safe, comfortable spaces and we desperately need a few streets that prioritize people.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends that ALL bike facilities follow the All Ages and Abilities guidelines. Please take this step for a more livable, more vibrant, and more equitable Pasadena.

Dear Members of the Municipal Services Committee,
Today, you are seeing first-hand the broad community support for All Ages and Abilities Greenways. Along with hundreds of people and 15 organizations across the city, I hope you will direct staff to implement the NACTO AA&A Guidelines at all locations on the routes.

As best I can tell, following national best practices is both feasible and appropriate throughout the four routes. Please, ask DOT staff about the specifics of their concerns, and seek solutions where needed.

In an effort to help understand the issues (and suggest solutions!), we've collected some information about the Greenways in these documents:

Greenways Information Packet:

Dear Members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I'm writing to express support for All Ages & Abilities Greenways. I walk and bike around Pasadena as my primary mode of transportation and exercise. I frequently use Wilson Ave and Craig Ave on my routes, so I'm pretty excited about the Greenways upgrade and want to see it done well.

We all deserve to be safe and feel comfortable when we get around, regardless of how we move. A safe streets network would make that more possible for everyone. Making space for all ages and abilities is also a clear way to "walk the walk" on inclusion and accessibility, which I think we could stand to do more often.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends that ALL bicycle facilities follow the All Ages and Abilities guidelines. Please support and enable city staff to follow these national best practices.

Thank you,

Pasadena needs a network of streets that are comfortable for people who don't drive a car, including people who are too young, too old, or too poor to drive. Plus, the climate emergency demands that we support affordable, low-carbon transportation.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends that ALL bicycle facilities follow the All Ages and Abilities guidelines.

Ignoring this national best practice would be a disservice to anyone who wants safe streets. Please take this step for a more livable, more vibrant, and more equitable Pasadena.

Thank you for everything you are doing for our city.

Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I saw the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition's call to support the all ages & abilities greenways.

We need to work on continuing to build out network connectivity for the bike ways that we currently have. We now have a shiny new Union protected bikeway, and bike lanes on Cordova, but there are very few safe north/south connections.

I know that the Wilson corridor is heavily used by people using active transit to get to school or work at Caltech, and that many parts of the road are too narrow for cars, car parking, and bicycles to safely travel through.

I know the segment of wilson from walnut to Colorado is exceptionally inhospitable to bicycles.

Also transportation is the largest single source of green house gas pollution in California, and though there was few percent drop in total emissions because of the COVID travel restrictions, people have been returning to their pre-2020 pandemic travel patterns.

This shows 2017 data, which because of COVID is probably a better reflection of typical tansportation patterns than 2020.

We desperately need to be reducing emissions, not increasing them, and getting more trips to use active transit is one of the cheapest most impactful ways of lowering greenhouse gas emissions. https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheconversation.com%2Fcycling-is-ten-times- more-important-than-electric-cars-for-reaching-net-zero-cities- 157163&data=05%7C01%7Cgstevenson%40cityofpasadena.net%7C4945f8ea88c24518984a08dbd44fc9b3%7C82d9fcOO 2c664402a28fc6bcdc32e491%7Cl%7CO%7C638337211753639547°/o7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAw MDAiLCJQIjoiV21uMzliLCJBTil61klhaWwiLCJXVC16MnO%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata-MXgEQ%2B5bDqEY8XvlGUINl NwpCl%2F39RMCZOZYOwxaY2E%3D&reserved=0

Avoiding high traffic streets was a major factor when buying our home, yet we were reminded of the dangers of busy streets each time we passed the house with the smashed pillar at Parkwood and Del Mar (https://www.Dasadenanow.com/main/no-iniuries-but-close-call-as-car-strikes-house-early-saturdav) and the memorial for Yang Yang Liu, who was struck and killed at Alien and San Pasqual ( https://www.pasadenanow.com/main/police-arrest-driver-of-car-that-struck-killed-pedestrian-in-crosswalk) In addition, we need to consider our vision for the city as a whole. Achieving net zero emissions to keep Pasadena livable for its next hundred years demands that we support affordable, low-carbon transportation.

As a member of the Caltech community who does not own a car, safe bike access from Caltech to grocery stores, parks, and other destinations in Pasadena greatly improves my quality of life. The Union St bikeway is a great step towards safe access to Old Town, but the safest route north, Wilson Ave, forces cyclists to travel with traffic and on unprotected bike lanes. I do not feel safe on that part of my commute, especially when I need to travel at dusk or during rush hour. Friends of mine have been hit by opening car doors while cycling on similar unprotected bike lanes, and cars frequently cut me off on turns or drift into the bike lane without noticing me.

Most residents want to live on safe, quiet streets. In addition, we need to consider our vision for the city as a whole.

Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I support the design of greenways to the all ages and abilities standard. As a father who enjoys hiking with my two year old son it is important that we are safe when riding to preschool everyday during the week and on errands like grocery shopping on the weekends. Currently we are averaging about 40 miles of hiking in Pasadena a week doing things that would otherwise require a car. With greater safety improvements to the bike infrastructure through the all ages and abilities guidelines we could eliminate more miles driven and other members of the community could enjoy the same benefits as well like reducing car congestion in the city and improving safety for everyone on the road.

I became more familiar with the all ages and abilities guidelines via my service as Vice Chair of the Transportation Advisory Commission in that body we wrote a letter of support for the adoption of the guidelines as design standards for the greenways. My advocacy here is entirety as a private citizen but my understanding and depth of knowledge about the guidelines stems from my service on TAC.

Thanks so much!

Dear members of the Municipal Services Committee,
I am writing to express support for All Ages & Abilities Greenways.

People walking and hiking in Pasadena deserve safe, comfortable spaces. We already have 50 north/south streets built to move cars. What we desperately need are a few streets that prioritize people. Drivers can stilt use these streets, too, but can easily keep speeds under 20 MPH on just four streets.

Pasadena needs a network of streets that are comfortable for people who don't drive a car, including people who are too young, too old, or too poor to drive. Plus, the climate emergency demands that we support affordable, low-carbon transportation.

I personally used to bicycle commute with my toddler in a bike seat along Craig from northeast Pasadena to Caltech.

Between Villa and Del Mar, I had to pay a great deal of attention to make sure I was both out of the way of the cars on the street and the doors of the parked cars. A guarded bike lane would have made our ride a lot safer. When my son is old enough to get himself around, I plan to return to bicycle commuting and look forward to a safe path between home and work.
