These resources include:

On January 31, 2024, staff from the Economic Development department attended an event hosted by Councilmember Hampton’s office in collaboration with Peru’s Export and Tourism Promotion Agency (PROMPERU). The PROMPERU team arranged guided tours for their representatives, visiting BYD Motors, Caltech, and HMRI. Later that evening, PROMPERU hosted an invitation-only event at Doheny Eye Institute, showcasing Peru’s growing tech industry.

3 b. Innovate Pasadena - Friday Coffee Meet Up – On Friday, February 2, staff attended the meet up. This event focused on Legal Considerations for Launching Your Startups. The speaker was Kenji Funahashi, a partner at Wilson Sonsini. Kenji has helped companies like Apple, Google, and Netflix go public.

4. Tech, Startups & Science
a. Biotechnology LIXTE, located at 680 E. Colorado Blvd., is developing a groundbreaking drug, led by CEO Bas van der Baan, to prevent normal cells from turning malignant. Unlike traditional standalone cancer treatments, LIXTE's drug is designed to complement established chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Operating without an in-house research team, the company outsources globally, with Baan based at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Founded in 2005 by John Kovach from City of Hope, LIXTE's molecular compound, LB-100, entered preclinical trials and attracted attention from the Netherlands Cancer Institute around 2020. The collaboration shifted focus to enhancing existing treatments.

b. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is involved in two NASA-funded projects, totaling $3.7 million, supporting emerging research institutions.

The first project, in collaboration with California State University, Los Angeles, and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, tackles environmental pollution using planetary science insights. The second, with California State University, Northridge, studies Halobacterium salinarum NRC-1 under simulated stressful conditions for insights into extraterrestrial life. These collaborations are part of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Bridge Program, promoting diversity in science and engineering.

The program provides seed funding for research projects, fostering relationships with NASA and offering mentorship for students. The projects involve new collaborations with diverse institutions, connecting to seven NASA centers, potentially impacting over 100 students. NASA aims to increase equitable access to talent from under-resourced institutions, supporting a more diverse STEM workforce. The SMD Bridge Program is accepting applications for additional seed funding until Friday, March 29.
