Dear Mayor Gordo,
Please vote "Yes" to the resolution condemning the genocide in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire on Monday March 18.

Human Rights Watch a,qrees with the International Court of Justice that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute a genocide and urges other countries to "use all forms of leverage, including sanctions and embargoes, to press the Israeli government to comply with the court's binding orders in the genocide case." hluman Rights Watch has also preyioyslvcalled the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza "apartheid" conditions.

The Israeli human rights group, B'T Selem, accuses Israel of War Crimes in Gaza and states, "...this policy is not new, but has been implemented towards Gaza for many years. The death, destruction, pain and horror it has wrought have led to nothing but more horror."
Pasadena can do our part by passing a ceasefire resolution now.

Thank you very much,
Cheri Herrboldt

I am a longtime Jewish resident of Pasadena. One of the things I love about this city is the spirit of tolerance here; it's a very different energy than what I feel in LA. The local Jewish school (which, sadly, closed in 2020) for years had an annual concert together with the Muslim school, and there was an Israeli Jewish boy who, a few years ago, was a star on the Muslim school's basketball team. That's the kind of city we live in.

Now, I read that the city council is considering a Gaza cease fire resolution on Monday. Such resolutions mean nothing and do nothing, except to antagonize people and pit them against each other. We all want an ending to this war and the terrible destruction it is causing, but a cease fire resolution should not be one-sided. It should go along with a release of the remaining Israeli hostages taken on Oct. 7 and an end to the Hamas-led government, which planned and executed this brutal attack and will never be an agent for peace.

There are many Israelis living here who are part of the Caltech community, and many Jews who have family and friends who have lost loved ones. To pass a one-sided resolution against Israel feels like a slap in the face to them, and there is fear that it would lead to more actions to make Jews feel unsafe here. So please, don't 1 do this! Leave US foreign policy to the federal government and let Pasadena remain a place of peace and respect for all its citizens.

Best wishes, Sara Schulman

Dear Mayor Gordo,
I work/live in Pasadena.

Please vote "Yes" to the ceasefire resolution on Monday, March 18.

I do not want any more of my tax dollars to be used to murder children.

I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudhy, Oakland, and Pomona in calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire by voting "Yes" on Monday.

Thank you,

Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

I want an end to the fighting and suffering in Gaza and Israel, as I'm sure you do. However, biased "ceasefire" city council resolutions have been shown to have no impact on this complex conflict. In fact, what the Jewish community has witnessed is that resolutions like this actually fuel more hate towards Jews and anyone else who does not believe cities should weigh in on international issues. There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councils.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by h-lamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

2. Israel has accepted terms laid out by international negotiators for an extended ceasefire and drastic increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is Hamas that has thus far rejected such a ceasefire.

3. There would be a permanent ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release all hostages, lay down its arms, and allow Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild in peace and security.

The type of "ceasefire" you are being pressured to support would not bring a just or lasting peace. What it would do is help Hamas, a genocidal terrorist group, maintain its grip on power in Gaza and continue its endless war against Israel. While I do not believe municipal governments should address international affairs at all, if you choose to adopt a resolution on this issue it must include a clear call for Hamas to release all hostages and surrender now.

I know that the Pasadena City Council wants to do the right thing and bring about an end to the humanitarian crisis, but this symbolic gesture will do nothing more than bring more hate and animosity towards the Jewish community.

I urge you not to adopt a resolution and use your energy to bring people together, rather than further dividing us.

Sincerely,
JeanineMann

Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am a Neurologist in Pasadena, serving the community for the past 15years. I am also an Iranian Jew who immigrated to US in 1991 with my parents after tolerating years of persecution and anti-SemJtic activities in Iran. My story is not unique, there are many members like me. The root of all concerns is not Islam ortrue Muslim, the issue are those radical terroristic groups such as Hamas, hijacking religion and murdering Jews on October 7th and continuing with their terrorist ideas to created hate, division and chaos. They have no intention of returning innocent hostages after their raped women, shot teenagers in the back and beheaded children in front of their parents. They are not peace loving, humanity compatible groups. I hope for the sake of my family and other Jewish members in the community who have served and lived a quiet life, you do the right thing.

Dear Pasadena City Council,
As a Jewish physician, practicing in Pasadena for over 35 years, I feel obligated to share my comments regarding the upcoming discussion about a "cease-fire" in Israel.

I Kave read the editorial by Jason Moss (pdf attached), and I do not have any better way to say what has been said in that article.

This resolution will do more harm than good.

This resolution is going to further divide" our community, which is the opposite of what we expect from our City Government.

This resolution undoubtedly will lead to IVIORE antisemitic acts in Pasadena, and as Jew and a member of the Pasadena Jewish Temple this causes me great concern and fear.

RECEIVED
S2f<MJlRj5 AM d: 08 City Councils should stay out of the Middle Fast By Jason MossCITY CLERK

CITY OF PASADENA
Since October 7, following Hamas' unprovoked attack on Israel, where terrorists killed over 1200 innocent people and kidnapped 253 people, city councils all across the country have received requests to adopt resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Let that sink in for a moment. People are demanding that city councils, whose public mandate is to be responsible for enacting city policies and laws, weigh in on an international issue as nuanced and complex as the decades-long fight between Israel and Palestinians. These requests require each city, with limited expertise and resources, to address a foreign issue they have no legislative authority over, ultimately taking their attention away from addressing issues that are affecting their city. In essence, city councils are being used to spread anti-lsrael sentiment in a large public forum.

This latest effort has now hit Pasadena, with the city council deciding to take up this issue at its March 18 meeting.

While well-intentioned, what city councils fail to recognize is that these resolutions do far more harm than good. Not only do they infer Israel is the root cause of all of the death and destruction in Gaza, they imply that Israel has no interest in peace.

Resolutions like this do not account for the fact that if Hamas immediately returned all of the hostages they stole on October 7; the death and destruction would end. Nor do they demand that Hamas stop its actions from preventing the humanitarian aid from reaching the people in Gaza who so desperately need it. These resolutions also tend not to mention that it was Hamas that broke an existing ceasefire on October 6 when they attacked Israel on October 7.

People don't seem to realize that in this latest round of negotiations, Israel has accepted the terms of a ceasefire laid out by negotiators. But Hamas has continually refused. How can Israel be held responsible for there not being a ceasefire when its adversary continues to prevent it from happening?
Often, unbeknownst to city councils, these ceasefire efforts are a means to a further end. Those who are calling for an immediate ceasefire are using this moment to litigate the past and elevate the ongoing struggle of Palestinians. Many supporters' ultimate goal is to further alienate Israel and continue to delegitimize Israel's right to exist through accusations and claims that Israel is an apartheid state or committing genocide. The Jewish community has continued to witness and experience an increase in hate speech and incidents that have targeted Jews these last several months since many people consider Jews to be Israel's proxies. Thus, these efforts further embolden more hate towards Jews along with those who do not support the ceasefire movement.

I understand that people are looking for ways to make a difference and end innocent lives being lost. However, if our congressional leaders, let alone professional negotiators, who are far more knowledgeable than any of us on this issue and intimately know each of the players at the table and have been in the room for the past several weeks, have been unable to pressure each side to agree to the terms of a ceasefire, what makes Pasadena's City Council (or any other city council who is considering similar action) think their symbolic gesture will make it happen? It won't, and these efforts will continue to tear apart the fabric of our society further.

For these reasons (and several others), I urge Pasadena's City Council, as well as any others considering a resolution of their own, to refrain from supporting these efforts and leaving international issues to the experts.

Jason Moss is the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, an organization that serves as the Jewish voice for the community, whose mission is to build community by strengthening and enhancing Jewish life within the greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys.

Honorable Mayor Gordo and City Council IVIembers,
I am the pastor of Pasadena Mennonite Church, and work and live in Pasadena. I'm writing to ask you to please vote "Yes" to the ceasefire resolution on Monday, March 18.

My faith compels me to speak out on behalf of the most vulnerable, and to treat all lives as equally precious and made in the Divine image. IVIennonites — and many other Christians who seek Jesus' way of peace — believe that violence and bloodshed can only produce more violence and bloodshed, and that we must find a different way forward toward reconciliation.

I have been increasingly alarmed by the reports of starvation and the denial of humanitarian aid, including the intentional targeting of humanitarian aid by Israel. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israel (with many weapons supplied by the US). These are civilians, over 13,000 of them children! I was deeply grieved by the horrific massacres on Oct. 7 of over 1,200 Israelis by Hamas. And, because I believe all lives are equally precious, I am horrified by the disproportionate massacres of Palestinians; over a 1:31 ratio! Even an "eye for an eye" and a "tooth for a tooth" would have been better than this (though I don't support revenge).

Will you respond with a ceasefire resolution? Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudhy, Oakland, and Pomona in calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire by voting "Yes" on Monday! Thank you,
