Dear Mayor, Councilmembers and Council staff:

I'm writing to urge you to vote YES on the ceasefire resolution when it comes up on the 18th.

Pasadena should join the dozens of American cities that have passed ceasefire resolutions.

Gaza is running out of time, and needs us to act now.

Pasadena city council has a proud history of standing for justice, even though the council does not exert direct control over national policy. They have spoken out on issues of grave importance in the past - massacres in Artsakh, reproductive freedom, protecting immigrants - this issue deserves the same consideration.

Approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, with tens of thousands more under the rubble. Two-thirds of the dead are women and children. Famine and disease are spreading, and deaths will escalate sharply without an immediate ceasefire and an inflow of aid.

The United Nations has repeatedly voted to pass a ceasefire resolution because the world sees that what is happening in Palestine is not self-defense, but ethnic cleansing and genocide. The refusal by the US to allow the world to speak with one voice is one of the reasons we are here.

Ceasefire is the way to ensure the safe return of all hostages. This is why families of Israeli hostages have been pleading with their government to agree to a ceasefire.

To say that Oct 7 was the end of a ceasefire is simply untrue. Prior to October 7th, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for Palestinians killed by Israel, with 507 Palestinians killed in the West Bank alone. Violence by Israeli forces and also by Israeli settlers (which has been encouraged by the Israeli government) had been escalating and unrelenting leading up to October 7th.

Israel's right to defend itself does not allow it to commit war crimes. Self-defense is not a blank check for genocide. Mass starvation is not self-defense. Mass displacement is not self- defense. Destroying 85 percent of Gaza's homes, as well as schools, hospitals, museums and houses of worship is not self-defense.

Israel has again attacked Palestinian civilians waiting in line to get aid. This time, Israeli forces have killed 80 and injured up to 200 people.

Palestinians do not have time; please act with courage and swiftness to pass this resolution.

Thank you.

Vote NO on biased calls for "ceasefire"

Dear Mayor Gordo,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

I want an end to the fighting and suffering in Gaza and Israel, as I'm sure you do. However, biased "ceasefire" city council resolutions have been shown to have no impact on this complex conflict. In fact, what the Jewish community has witnessed is that resolutions like this actually fuel more hate towards Jews and anyone else who does not believe cities should weigh in on international issues. There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councils.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

2. Israel has accepted terms laid out by international negotiators for an extended ceasefire and drastic increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is Hamas that has thus far rejected such a ceasefire.

3. There would be a permanent ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release all hostages, lay down its arms, and allow Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild in peace and security.

The type of "ceasefire" you are being pressured to support would not bring a just or lasting peace. What it would do is help Hamas, a genocidal terrorist group, maintain its grip on power in Gaza and continue its endless war against Israel. While I do not believe municipal governments should address international affairs at all, if you choose to adopt a resolution on this issue it must include a clear call for Hamas to release all hostages and surrender now.

I know that the Pasadena City Council wants to do the right thing and bring about an end to the humanitarian crisis, but this symbolic gesture will do nothing more than bring more hate and animosity towards the Jewish community.

I urge you not to adopt a resolution and use your energy to bring people together, rather than further dividing us.

Sincerely,
Hila Abada

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment ofRafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudahy, Oakland, and Pomona in voting for a ceasefire by voting "Yes" on the resolution introduced by Counilmember Rivas, this Monday

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than

1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Dear Mayor Victor Gordo,
My name is Andrea, and I'm an educator living in Pasadena. I am writing to urge you to please vote "Yes" to the ceasefire resolution on Monday, March 18.

As a teacher and somebody who works with younger generations, I have seen the care, passion, and activism among our students who are calling for a ceasefire and an end to violence by Israel against a vulnerable population. There is an overwhelming sense among them that the plight of people in Gaza is our plight too - that we have a responsibility as a local community to stand in solidarity with them. I stand in solidarity with my students and ask that you, too, join us.

Beyond this, I have been so deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge. Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudhy, Oakland, and Pomona in calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire by voting "Yes" on Monday.

Thank you,
Dr. Andrea Acosta

Sincerely,
Kathy Afshani

Thank you.

Thank you,

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I have been sitting with immense grief and outrage over what's happening in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed (while many are still under the rubble) by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment ofRafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

A ceasefire is the only ways forward. It will stop the death and destruction in Gaza, return the hostages/Palestinian prisoners and begin diplomatic efforts for a resolution that ensures safety, liberation, and dignity of all peoples in the Holy Land.

Thank you,

Dear Mayor,
The center of my life is Pasadena, and I love it. But i cannot imagine worshipping/ shopping and having fun in a city that does not vote "yes" on the ceasfire resolution coming up on Monday, March 18.

Ceasefire is asking to stop killing people and enabling food and water to go in. It should not be controversial unless you are influenced by money and politics which i hope you are not.

Decency and humanity calls us to stop a genocide. And this is your opportunity.

We sometimes think what would we have done in WWII during the Holocaust or earlier during the Armenian genocide? Well, this is our opportunity to show that we stand with humanity and we want the killings to stop.

Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces. By the time you read this, there will be hundreds more. Imagine how you would have felt if you or your family lived in Gaza. Wouldn't you want the cities of the world to show solidarity? Most Americans want a ceasefire. Let's join the other American cities who made us proud and asked for one.

Be a force of love
Thank you,

Vote NO on biased calls for "ceasefire"

Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councits.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by hlamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

2. Israel has accepted terms Laid out by international negotiators for an extended ceasefire and drastic increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is Hamas that has thus far rejected such a ceasefire.

3. There would be a permanent ceasefire tomorrow if hlamas would release all hostages, lay down its arms, and allow Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild in peace and security.

Kenebrew, Jerice

Urgent Appeal for Ceasefire in Gaza. Vote 'yes' to Ceasefire Resolution I Some people who received this message don't often get email from. Dear Mayor Gordo, Esteemed Council members and Council staff, I write to you as an advocate for peace in our community and with a heavy heart regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. I urge you to please vote "YES" and support a ceasefire resolution this coming Monday 18th.

As we are all aware, the situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with escalating violence leading to devastating consequences for innocent civilians on both sides. The loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and immense suffering are unbearable to witness, and it is incumbent upon us, as representatives of our community, to take a stand for peace and humanitarian values.

I firmly believe that a ceasefire is the first step towards de-escalation and creating an environment conducive to dialogue and negotiation. The current situation not only brings immense human suffering but also places Israeli hostages and civilians at risk. A ceasefire is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic necessity to create a conducive environment for dialogue and reconciliation, to prevent further loss of life and to pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

Local governments are not excused from the matters of global affairs and by supporting a ceasefire resolution, we send a powerful message of solidarity with those affected by the conflict and demonstrate our commitment to upholding human rights and international law, which are being disregarded daily by the Israeli government. Moreover, it aligns with our community's values of compassion, cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution.

I urge you to consider the following reasons for supporting a ceasefire resolution in Gaza:

Humanitarian Concerns: Innocent civilians, including women and children, are bearing the brunt of the conflict. A ceasefire would provide much-needed relief and access to essential humanitarian aid, including medical supplies and food.

Preventing Further Escalation: Continued violence only leads to a cycle of revenge and further destabilization. A ceasefire creates a window of opportunity for diplomatic efforts and dialogue to address underlying grievances.

Upholding International Norms: Supporting a ceasefire reinforces our commitment to international law, including the protection of civilians during armed conflict and respect for the principles of proportionality and distinction.

Promoting Regional Stability: A peaceful resolution in Gaza contributes to broader regional and global stability and security, benefiting not only the immediate parties involved but also neighboring countries and the international community.

Safety and Return of Israeli hlostages: The consistent bombing and shelling of Gaza from the IDF is only putting the Israeli hostages at greater risk of harm or death. Since the assault on Gaza began we have seen the greatest number of hostages (105) released during the Ceasefire of last November. In the three and a half months since then the IDF has only rescued 3 hostages and they have also shot 3 Israeli hostages themselves, mistaking them for Palestinian civilians waving white flags. Also with the Israeli Government's restriction of food and aid into Gaza the hostages along with the Palestinian civilians are at risk of starvations and death from injuries and disease.

I respectfully request that you prioritize this matter and work towards garnering support for a ceasefire resolution in Gaza through diplomatic channels and advocacy efforts. Your leadership and influence can make a meaningful difference in alleviating the suffering of innocent people and advancing the cause of peace.

Thank you for considering my appeal. I am ready to provide any additional information or assistance needed to support this crucial initiative.

Thank you,
