Dear Mayor Gordo,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

I want an end to the fighting and suffering in Gaza and Israel, as I'm sure you do. However, biased "ceasefire" city council resolutions have been shown to have no impact on this complex conflict. In fact, what the Jewish community has witnessed is that resolutions like this actually fuel more hate towards Jews and anyone else who does not believe cities should weigh in on international issues. There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councils.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 iimocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

2. Israel has accepted terms laid out by international negotiators for an extended ceasefire and drastic increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is Hamas that has thus far rejected such a ceasefire.

3. There would be a permanent ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release all hostages, lay down its arms, and allow Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild in peace and security.

The type of "ceasefire" you are being pressured to support would not bring a just or lasting peace. What it would do is help Hamas, a genocidal terrorist group, maintain its grip on power in Gaza and continue its endless war against Israel. While I do not believe municipal governments should address international affairs at all, if you choose to adopt a resolution on this issue it must include a clear call for Hamas to release all hostages and surrender now.

I know that the Pasadena City Council wants to do the right thing and bring about an end to the humanitarian crisis, but this symbolic gesture will do nothing more than bring more hate and animosity towards the Jewish community.

I urge you not to adopt a resolution and use your energy to bring people together, rather than further dividing us.

Sincerely,
Daphna Nazarian

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment ofRafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudahy, Oakland, and Pomona in voting for a ceasefire by voting "Yes" on the resolution introduced by Counilmember Rivas, this Monday

Dear Council Members,
We are reaching out in opposition to a ceasefire resolution that will be proposed at your meeting.

While this appears to be a resolution in favor of peace, in fact it is a propaganda move to incite anti-Democracy, anti-Israel, and anti-Jewish sentiments. We urge you to refuse to even consider the resolution.

These politically motivated resolutions are circulating in "toolkits" sent out by the Committee on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and other terrorist network support groups in the U.S. [1]. The toolkits overtly state that they do not care about the wording; they just want to be able to claim that the city/county has denounced Israel. They have unfailingly proved divisive to the community and have had the effect of pitting sides against each other in antipathy rather than bonding them together in a mutual desire for peace.

There is no possibility of a ceasefire while Hamas is still in power. As Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) said, "Israel must destroy every element of Hamas," who's sole and sinister purpose is to eradicate Israel and the Jewish people [2]. For your reference, we have provided excerpts from the Hamas charter below [3].

Hamas has rejected proposals for months-long pauses in fighting simply in exchange for releasing the hostages. They have vowed to draw Israel into an eternal war, manipulating public opinion and thwarting the process of normalization underway between Israel and several Arab countries. Please note that there was in fact a ceasefire in place on October 7, when Hamas slaughtered Israelis, Americans, and Foreign Nationals in the most barbaric ways seen in centuries. Hamas vows to repeat this over and over even after a new ceasefire agreement is reached.

Furthermore, we urge you not to approve any resolution whose language parrots a false narrative claiming that Jewish people in Israel are colonizers engaged in a 75-year occupation.

In fact there has been a Jewish presence in Israel for the past 3,000 years. They are neither colonizers, nor "occupiers" in Gaza - Gaza has been independent since 2005 when Israel removed all its residents and military from Gaza. In 2006, Gazans voted Hamas into power and they have been under Hamas rule since. Nonetheless, anti-Israel and anti-Jewish voices claim that Israel is occupying Gaza and that "resistance is justified", spreading dangerous misinformation about a democratic country that is used as a justification for terrorism.

As a city council, you represent your local residents in municipal decisions. If the city council were to engage in international affairs, you would likely need to vote on various matters, such as the ongoing Syrian war, the Yemen Civil War, the Rohingya Crisis, the South Sudanese Civil War, and numerous other global issues.

Sadly, ceasefire resolutions have been considered in many city councils in the past few months, and each time rather than enhance peace, they have brought with them vitriol, which has contributed to the 400% increase in anti-Semitism in this country [4]. We have most recently witnessed alarming Neo-Nazi marches in Nashville, the apprehension of an individual plotting to harm the Jewish community in Indiana, physical harm inflicted on Jews on college campuses, the murder of a Jewish man in San Diego and the unsettling cancellation of all college classes in Queens due to a credible terrorist threat.

Normalizing hate against Jews fuels white supremacy, which is seeing an unprecedented growth. The normalization of hate against Jews inadvertently is going to impact ALL minorities. We don't need any more hate in this country. We cannot regress as a country.

Jewish people do not advocate for unnecessary conflicts; it's not in our nature. Our priority is the safe return of our innocent civilians who are being held hostage, possibly under very violent conditions. Additionally, we must protect ourselves from a hostile terrorist organization that harbors destructive intentions towards Jews. Let's be clear, Hamas is waging a war against the Jewish people and democracy itself. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al- Zahar stated on December 12, 2022, "The entire 510 million square kilometers of Planet Earth will come under [a system] where there is no injustice, no oppression, no treachery, no Zionism, no treacherous Christianity." (source: http://tinyurl.com/5n8298r4) Furthermore, with all the international conflicts that have not merited your attention, deciding to suddenly weigh in on Israel's foreign policy would send a dual message: a) that a democracy has no right to defend itself against barbaric terrorism, and b) that you hold Israel to a different standard than other countries.

The European Parliament has passed a stipulation that any call for a ceasefire should be conditional on the complete dismantling of Hamas and the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. We hope you would agree.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Seth Nesenholtz

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
The ongoing tragedy unfolding in Gaza is nothing short of horrifying. Since Oct. 7, we've witnessed the loss of over 38,000 lives at the hands of Israeli forces, and the recent intensified bombardment of Rafah is a stark reminder of the dire situation faced by over 1.5 million displaced Palestinians seeking sanctuary. Meanwhile, the specter of starvation looms over the majority of Gaza's population, exacerbated by the blockade hindering humanitarian aid.

In light of these grave circumstances, it is imperative that we stand resolute and unwavering in our call for a ceasefire. I urge you to stand in solidarity with the 70-plus cities across the United States (including notable examples like San Francisco, Cudahy, Oakland, and Pomona), by endorsing the ceasefire resolution put forth by Councilmember Rivas this upcoming Monday.

Thank you,
Sarah Newell

Dear City of Pasadena Councilmembers:

I strongly urge you not to adopt a biased 'Cease Fire' resolution directed at Israel being put forth at your March 18th, 2024 City Council meeting. You are a City Government and as such should be focusing on local City issues and concerns.

No one can deny that this current conflict in the Middle East is terrible and filled with many innocent deaths on both sides; however, an adoption of a biased cease fire by a local government, directed at Israel and Jews, reverberates the ignorance of the nuances in this area's historical conflicts and directly sounds the alarm of antisemitism.

My question to you is why draft this resolution? Why not a craft a resolution to cease the gang violence in Haiti or a Resolution to Cease the violence against innocent Muslims in Iran tortured by their own government or create a resolution directed at Russia to Cease Fire on Ukraine? I question the verbiage in your Cease Fire Resolution without demanding the release of hostages and demand that Hamas stop using their own people as human shields. Your current Cease Fire resolution footnoting other Cities who have adopted this antisemitic resolution leads me to question the underlying reasons. What I do know is that putting forth this resolution only fuels unsafe feelings that Jews are feeling around the world.

I believe that the Pasadena City Council wants to do what is best during this heartbreaking time of humanitarian crisis and hostage victims; however, putting forth this Israeli Cease Fire Resolution and drifting away from your local politics is by no means the correct answer.

Thank you.

Dear Mayor and City Council,
Please pass a resolution condemning the genocide in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire.
hluman Rights Watch agrees with the International Court of Justice that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute a genocide and urges other countries to "use all forms of leverage, including sanctions and embargoes, to press the Israeli government to comply with the court's binding orders in the genocide case."
Human Rights Watch has also previously called the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza "apartheid" conditions.

The Israeli human rights group, BT Selem, accuses Israel of War Crimes in iza and states, "...this policy is not new, but has been implemented towards Gaza for many years. The death, destruction, pain and horror it has wrought have led to nothing but more horror."
BT Selem has also previously called the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza "apartheid."
Amnesty International has also called on the nations of the world to bring pressure on Israel to comply with the ruling of the International Cout of Justice. Amnesty International also previously called the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza "apartheid."
//
In addition to these human rights organizations, both Jimmy Carter and Desmond Tutu called the conditions in the West Bank and Gaza "apartheid."
The violence did not start on October 7. Every day before that, Palestinians have been attacked, tortured, and killed by the apartheid regime of Israel.

Any argument that Israel has the right to defend itself should also apply to the Palestinians. The argument that Israel is justified in its actions as a response to Oct 7 also justifies the response of Oct 7 by Hamas in retaliation for all the violence done against the Palestinians for the last 75 years.

In 2018-2019, the people of Gaza engaged in 21 months of nonviolent protests at the border called "The March of Return." From the very first day, Israeli forces fired on these nonviolent protesters, eventually killing 223 people, including journalists and medics. Thousands more were injured.
(The nonviolent resistance of the Palestinians goes virtually unreported in the U.S.-based media, but it has been persistent over 75 years.) Even if the violence did unaccountably start on October 7, what Israel is doing in Gaza is not self-defense. Israel has killed over 30,000 people, two thirds of them women and children. Israel has bombed every hospital and destroyed over half of the homes in Gaza. The Israeli offensive has become the deadliest event for journalists since the Committee to Protect Journalists began compiling statistics over 30 years ago. The CPJ accuses Israel of targeting journalists.

Israel-Gaza war takes record toll on journalists -
Committee to Protect...

L.pciate: As or Decembei^ 31, 2Q23, a: least 77 :ourna!iSts and media workers were killed; 70 of them Palestinian.

Miko Peled, Israeli peace activist and son of one of the generals who fought in Israel's war of independence in 1948, asked recently, "Are we out of our mind? Condemning the resistance of people who are being oppressed and killed, subjected to genocide for 75 years? Are we out of our minds? 'Oh yes, by the way, there is a genocide going on and it's terrible, but first we have to condemn the Palestinians who dare to stand UP.'"
///
Please do not delay in condemning this genocide and calling for a ceasefire.

Dear Mayor Gordo and City Council members,
I'm writing today to urge you to support a ceasefire resolution in Gaza at the March 18 meeting. I want to thank Councilmember Jess Rivas for making the motion to agendize this at last Monday's meeting, and for everyone who voted to move the topic forward. Hearing your voices saying "yes" brought tears of relief to my eyes after so many tears of despair. Thank you to city staff for your hard work this week in making the special, expanded March 18 meeting possible.

I know among our citizenry there is opposition to this resolution. Some say it is anti-Semitic, or that local government should not insert themselves into foreign affairs. Others feel that such resolutions don't make a difference and therefore are a waste of time. To all of this opposition I say:

1. Calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is not anti-Semitic or anti-Jewish. It is not about favoring people of one faith tradition or ethnicity over another. It IS about shining a light on the most current manifestation of 75 years of systemic violence, oppression, dispossession, and murder of indigenous people. Calling for a halt to these genocidal practices is a call to save Israeli lives as well as Palestinian lives. It may very well save the lives of US citizens as well, because resentment over the US's unconditional support of Israel is in part what prompted the attacks of September 1 1,2001. A ceasefire resolution is a demonstration of our belief that peace in Israel/Palestine is essential to the well-being of the entire population of our globe. The world watches what the US does; we can help turn the tide.

2. Calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is a collective responsibility. As we are painfully aware, billions of tax dollars paid by US citizens are what fund the bombs being dropped on innocent people in Gaza and elsewhere. Ever since last Octrober, Pasadenans have been raising their voices every Monday in front of Judy Chu's office, trying to get the message across that we want our tax dollars used to improve lives, not decimate entire populations. As the people in power in our local juristiction, you can be our super megaphone, amplifying this message to those who haven't yet allowed themselves to listen.

3. Yes, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is a symbolic action. But as Pasadena adds its butterfly wing- sized motion to that of over 70 cities across the US, we nudge the world that much closer to being a place of peace, justice, and security. Please vote to join this movement before it's too late.

I'm grateful to live in a city with such clear avenues for citizens to bring their concerns to the council. Please listen with open ears and open hearts to all the voices calling for this ceasefire, and vote YES to make it a reality.

Peace, salaam, shalom

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I am writing to you regarding international humanitarian affairs as a resident of Pasadena. I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide of Palestinians occurring in Gaza. Since October, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces and thousands more have been injured and trapped under the rubble, as a result of Israel's brutal carpet bombing. In addition, I am appalled by the Israeli military's air strikes and violent invasions on hospitals, human rights organization offices, UN schools converted into places of refuge, and even areas where hungry Palestinians arrive to receive food and other aid dostribution. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians have been forced to relocate.

Additionally, people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid, includinng food and direly needed medical supplies, being blocked by Israel.

It is critical that the city of Pasadena responds collectively by adopting a ceasefire resolution and takes action as a voice of justice amidst such cruel suffering and genocide. Please join over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, Montebello, Pomona, and Santa Ana in officially calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

As a resident of Pasadena (Zip Code 91107), I urge you to stand up for the dignity of innocent lives in Palestine and vote "Yes" on the resolution introduced by Counilmember Rivas, this Monday, March 18.

Thank you,
Isabel N.

Forthe City to support a cease fire is appropriate so long as it is based on a principle. I am okay with a call for a cease fire in Gaza accompanied by a call for a cease fire in Ukraine, in Myanmar, in Ethiopia, and in Sudan. An end to the civilian casualties of these wars is something we want to support. If only Israel is singled out it sends a different message, not a moral one, and I don't think the City wants to be there.

Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

Sincerely,
Julia Nickerson

Dear Mayor, Councilmembers and Council staff:

I'm writing to urge you to vote YES on the ceasefire resolution when it comes up on the 18th. Pasadena should join the dozens of American cities that have passed ceasefire resolutions. Gaza is running out of time, and needs us to act now.

Pasadena city council has a proud history of standing for justice, even though the council does not exert direct control over national policy. They have spoken out on issues of grave importance in the past - massacres in Artsakh, reproductive freedom, protecting immigrants - this issue deserves the same consideration.

Approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been kilted, with tens of thousands more under the rubble. Two- thirds of the dead are women and children. Famine and disease are spreading, and deaths will escalate sharplywithout an immediate ceasefire and an inflow of aid.

The United Nations has repeatedly voted to pass a ceasefire resolution because the world sees that what is happening in Palestine is not self-defense, but ethnic cleansing and genocide. The refusal by the US to allow the world to speak with one voice is one of the reasons we are here.

Ceasefire is the way to ensure the safe return of alt hostages. This is why families of Israeli hostages have been pleading with their government to agree to a ceasefire. To say that Oct 7 was the end of a ceasefire is simply untrue. Prior to October 7th, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for Palestinians killed by Israel, with 507 Palestinians killed in the West Bank alone. Violence by Israeli forces and also by Israeli settlers (which has been encouraged by the Israeli government) had been escalating and unrelenting leading up to October 7th.
1 Israel's right to defend itself does not allow it to commit war crimes. Self-defense is not a blank check for genocide. Mass starvation is not self-defense. Mass displacement is not self-defense. Destroying 85 percent of Gaza's homes, as well as schools, hospitals, museums and houses of worship is not self- defense. Israel has again attacked Palestinian civilians waiting in Line to get aid. This time, Israeli forces have killed 80 and injured up to 200 people. Palestinians do not have time; please act with courage and swiftness to pass this resolution.

Finally, I am sharing an op-ed from this morning that discusses why city councit resolutions matter. https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/why-city-council-resolutions-for-a-gaza-ceasefire-matter Thankyou,

I am writing to ask City Council to act urgently to stop the slaughter of innocents in Gaza, being done with U.S. weapons and political support. There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councils.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

Sincerely,
Morris Noorani

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than

1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
My name is Caelyn and I work in Pasadena. I grew up with family all over Pasadena. I love to visit the shops and sights Pasadena has to offer. I could go on, but in short: Pasadena is a city near and dear to my heart.

This is why it pains me to know that the city council is being pressured by- and possibly worse, listening to Zionists in the community. It seem that they disapprove of an immediate ceasefire, that would benefit all parties involved! It is puzzling to stand in the way of the humanitarian act of not bombing refugees that have been forved into a ridiculously dense area.

Such a stance is baffling at best- heinous at worst.

It seems that group also wants the city of Pasadena to "Adopt a policy that the City will not take official positions on any non-local, political, or social issues". The city has not failed to address political issues that affect the residents and communities in the past- it would be a shame to pressure you into a stance of silence for the forseeable future in order to avoid speaking on a single issue of the present. It is my sincere wish that the city council realizes how detrimental this stance could be to standing in solidarity with community members and vote "no" on the action if it is brought to vote.

I, as have many of us, am been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah- "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge- to a completely unprecedented level of cmelty and destruction.

Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May. When aid does arrive, desperate Palestinians flock to trucks and air dropped packages in droves to secure some kind of sustenance. However, this act has become extremely dangerous. Not only do the Israeli forces continuously bomb this population it has forcibly displaced, they also shoot those same refugees when they try to gather aid from trucks and airdrops. This atrocity has been documented twice now- in less than a month; leaving over 160 Palestinians shot dead for the crime of trying to feed their starving families.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a immediate ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities- including San Francisco, Cudahy, Oakland, and Pomona- in voting for a ceasefire by voting "Yes" on the resolution introduced by Counilmember Rivas, this Monday!

Dear City Council,
I encourage the City Council to stay within its swimming Lane and Adopt Resolution 1 or 2 on tonight's agenda — i.e. it should not take a position on Israel/Gaza or any other political matter that does not directly affect locals. Israel/Gaza in particular is complex, and any City position will open a Pandora's Box of unintended consequences and will have a negative affect on both Jewish and all Middle Eastern residents Living in Pasadena.

Best regards,
Andrew Oksner

Dear Mayor Gordo, Council members and staff:

I am a longtime Pasadena resident, homeowner, voter and union member.

I am deeply concerned that the council may take up a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Hamas/lsrael War.

On the surface, calling for a ceasefire may seem like a centrist and compassionate thing to do. Unfortunately, the pattern of these measures is to incriminate Israel, ignore the role of Hamas in rejecting peace overtures, and create a dangerous atmosphere for Jewish residents.

As a citizen who is active in local and state politics, and often comes to testify at Pasadena and other City Councils, I also feel that it is not appropriate to bring up a measure on foreign affairs, no matter what its content.

We face many challenges in Pasadena, and I urge our local government to take care of local issues. These include affordable housing, economic development, climate change, green space and quality of life/crime, including rampant mail theft.

I urge you to vote "No" if this resolution comes up on the City Council agenda;and to consider putting forth another resolution stating that the council will focus on issues that directly affect the City of Pasadena and its residents.

Sincerely,
Anne-Marie Otey

I'm writing to urge you to vote YES on the ceasefire resolution when it comes up on the 18th. Pasadena should join the dozens of American cities that have passed ceasefire resolutions. Gaza is running out of time, and needs us to act now.

Pasadena city council has a proud history of standing for justice, even though the council does not exert direct control over national policy. They have spoken out on issues of grave importance in the past - massacres in Artsakh, reproductive freedom, protecting immigrants - this issue deserves the same consideration.

Approximately 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, with tens of thousands more under the rubble. Two-thirds of the dead are women and children. Famine and disease are spreading, and deaths will escalate sharply without an immediate ceasefire and an inflow of aid.

The United Nations has repeatedly voted to pass a ceasefire resolution because the world sees that what is happening in Palestine is not self-defense, but ethnic cleansing and genocide. The refusal by the US to allow the world to speak with one voice is one of the reasons we are here.

Ceasefire is the way to ensure the safe return of all hostages.

Israel's right to defend itself does not allow it to commit war crimes. Self-defense is not a blank check for genocide.

Mass starvation is not self-defense. Mass displacement is not self-defense. Destroying 85 percent of Gaza's homes, as well as schools, hospitals, museums and houses of worship is not self-defense.

Israel has again attacked Palestinian civilians waiting in line to get aid. This time, Israeli forces have killed 80 and injured up to 200 people.

Palestinians do not have time; please act with courage and swiftness to pass this resolution.

Thank you.

Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, white harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

I want an end to the fighting and suffering in Gaza and Israet, as I'm sure you do.

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

Thank you,
Sasha Ortiz
