Dear City Manager Miguel Marquiz,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

I want an end to the fighting and suffering in Gaza and Israel, as I'm sure you do. However, biased "ceasefire" city council resolutions have been shown to have no impact on this complex conflict. In fact, what the Jewish community has witnessed is that resolutions like this actually fuel more hate towards Jews and anyone else who does not believe cities should weigh in on international issues. There are many examples of such hate, including in the Oakland and Long Beach city councils.

I feel it is important to remind you of the following:

1. A ceasefire existed on October 6 but was broken by Hamas on October 7 when they brutally attacked Israel, killing 1,200 innocent civilians and kidnapping 253 people - ranging in age from 9 months to 85 years old.

2. Israel has accepted terms laid out by international negotiators for an extended ceasefire and drastic increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. It is Hamas that has thus far rejected such a ceasefire.

3. There would be a permanent ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release all hostages, lay down its arms, and allow Israelis and Palestinians to rebuild in peace and security.

The type of "ceasefire" you are being pressured to support would not bring a just or lasting peace. What it would do is help Hamas, a genocidal terrorist group, maintain its grip on power in Gaza and continue its endless war against Israel.

While I do not believe municipal governments should address international affairs at all, if you choose to adopt a resolution on this issue it must include a clear call for Hamas to release all hostages and surrender now.

I know that the Pasadena City Council wants to do the right thing and bring about an end to the humanitarian crisis, but this symbolic gesture will do nothing more than bring more hate and animosity towards the Jewish community.

I urge you not to adopt a resolution and use your energy to bring people together, rather than further dividing us.

Sincerely,
Kaivan Harouni

Dear Councilmember Rivas,
My name is Donelia Heyn-Lamb and I reside in your district 5, zip code 91104.

Thank you for voting to agendize a resolution on ceasefire for Gaza. I was present in the council chambers last Monday and it was an exciting moment.

And now I must urge you to vote YES on the resolution for ceasefire this Monday. This is an extremely important issue for me as I have spent the last 25 years advocating for peace and justice in Palestine and Israel. I am appalled at Israel's response in Gaza and the U.S. blank check for more and more weapons for Israel's war machine. It must stop! And so must the U.S. supply of weaponry in spite of our own laws against it.

The very least we must do is go on the record saying enough is enough! Stop the killing! Please vote yes to support the resolution for ceasefire.

Thank you,
Donelia Heyn-Lamb

Dear Pasadena City Council,
As a Jewish physician, practicing in Pasadena for over 35 years, I feel obligated to share my commentsregarding the upcoming discussion about a "cease-fire" in'Israel.

I Have read the editorial by Jason Moss (pdf attached), and I do not have any better way to say what has been said in that article.

This resolution will do more harm than good.

This resolution is going to further divide'our community, which is the opposite of what we expect from our City Government.

This resolution undoubtedly will lead to MORE antisemitic acts in Pasadena, and as Jew and a member of the Pasadena Jewish Temple this causes me great concern and fear.

Warmly,
Bryan Jick, MD

Sincerely,

Dear City Clerk Mark Jomsky,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

Dear Council Members,
Please support and vote for a ceasefire resolution that calls for an end to military aid to Israel, and calls for immediate resumption of emergency food and medical aid to residents of Gaza.

Failure to do so is tacit support for genocide. Thank you.

Dear Councilwoman Williams,
Please vote "Yes" to the ceasefire resolution on Monday, March 18.

I am a resident here in Pasadena, and over the last few weeks have heard the call to solidarity with Palestinian people. As I've gotten more involved, I've become more aware of the risk of speaking out.

For myself, I have found those risks to be worth it. I have found that my humanity is worth this. That the Palestinian people and their freedom and is wrapped up in my own, and that is worth it.

I have been deeply alarmed by the genocide occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, over 38,000 people have been killed by Israeli forces. Most recently, Israel has escalated bombardment of Rafah, "the last safe zone" in Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Additionally, a majority of people in Gaza are facing starvation due to humanitarian aid being blocked with the UN warning of famine as soon as May.

It is critical that we respond firmly and strongly with a ceasefire resolution. Please join the over 70 US cities, including San Francisco, Cudhy, Oakland, and Pomona in calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire by voting "Yes" on Monday.

Thank you,
Hannah K.

Dear Sirs and Madames,
I understand that kindly-minded people may be under the impression that it would be a gesture of peace and goodwill to pass a declaration for a ceasefire in Gaza in the local city council meeting here in Pasadena. However it actually is terribly misguided.

The state of Israel forcibly evicted Jewish residents of Gaza in 2005 using as its justification the ongoing violence (with rocket attacks, terrorist incursions, etc.) against Gazan Jewish communities as well as surrounding communities in Israel.

The Palestinians then had their own self-governing statelet in Gaza (free of Jews) and billionsof dollars of outside aid to build a peaceful, thriving and prosperous place.

But instead of peace, the Muslim Brotherhood group Hamas purged their rivals and took over the government in 2007 and created a terrorist infrastructure with tunnels and weapons. And since then nearby communities in Israel have continued to receive tens of thousands of rockets from their launching sites in hospitals, mosques, apartment buildings and other civilian-occupied areas of Gaza (war crimes according to International law). The people of Gaza voted for Hamas, which also has massive support from Palestinians in what is called 'the West Bank".

There have subsequently been a number of incursions into Israel from these areas and subsequent Israeli army actions against the Hams terrorists with a number of cease fires. The last ceasefire was breached by Hamas on October 7, 2023 with a full-scale pogrom where Arab Bedouin citizens of Israel and foreign workers were also murdered.

Now there is a national, nay an international movement, to demonize the Jewish state of Israel where people of all ethnicities and religions have full rights. What the Radical Muslim Hamas and its supporters want (as well as other Palestinian groups) is the destruction of the state of Israel and all Jews "from the river to the sea". And a ceasefire would just be used as it always has before as an excuse for these death-dealers to build their strength again until they can make further attacks which they have publicly promised to do.

Israel has many strictures in place to protect innocent civilians caught in a field of intense urban warfare. Calls for ceasefire, even by some Jewish groups both on the extreme left and right, are deluded at best.

The City of Pasadena would be ill-advised to pass any resolution supporting a ceasefire as it will be seen as an antisemitic gesture and add further fuel to the growing level ofJew-hatred here and elsewhere.

Please stick to the local business of the Pasadena City government and stop getting involved with issues that are purely symbolic and ultimately can only be seen as an antisemitic gesture further fueling the growing misguided level of Jew- hatred here and elsewhere.

Sincerely,
Bruce I. Kodish

Dear City Clerk Mark Jomsky,
I am writing you today to urge you not to adopt any biased "ceasefire" resolution that would fuel divisions and hate in our community, while harming efforts to end the horrific October 7th War.

Sincerely,
Julie Litman
