As part of the staff presentation, Bonnie Tang, a South Pasadena resident, shared her testimony on losing her son Nicholas to suicide on the Colorado Street Bridge in April 2021.

The Committee expressed condolences to the family of Nicholas Tang and appreciation for sharing their testimony.
Councilmember Hampton encouraged the Committee to move
forward and direct staff to return within 90 days with a recommendation. He advocated for the installation of vertical mesh as a suicide mitigation prevention measure. In addition, he recommended the installation of cameras on the bridge with motion detectors, including a 24-hour live feed to the Police Department.
Councilmember Hampton spoke on the need for staff to change the perception of the Colorado Street Bridge as the "Suicide Bridge," and asked staff to return to the Committee with information on the Pasadena Police Department's crisis negotiator. He also asked staff to provide additional information on rescue mattresses rated 150 feet or higher.
Vice Mayor Madison advocated for an engineering solution, rather than providing patrols and technology as a suicide prevention mitigation, and recommended that staff contact Caltech for input on the matter. He advocated for a ground cover option or other impediments for the Colorado Street Bridge as a suicide mitigation prevention method.
Maxim Nasab, representing Apex Architecture, provided
engineering and pricing information on the differences between installing horizontal mesh �nd or a vertical barrier.
