Pasadena Heritage supports the nomination of the Elks Lodge at 400 East Colorado Boulevard for local landmark designation. This significant building exemplifies the Neoclassical Revival style, designed in 1912 by renowned architect Myron Hunt, with thoughtful additions by Cyril Bennett and Fitch Haskell in 1928. Its grand columns, symmetrical fa?ade, and detailed ornamentation make it a standout example of early 20th-century architecture in Pasadena.
In addition to its architectural importance, the Elks Lodge has served as a cornerstone ofcommunity life for over a century. As the home of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Pasadena Lodge No. 672, the building has hosted numerous civic and cultural events, creating a lasting impact on the city's social fabric. Its location on East Colorado Boulevard has also contributed to the area's historical and commercial identity, and it is seen by millions every year as the Rose Parade turns this iconic corner onto Colorado Boulevard.
Preserving this building through landmark designation ensures that its historical and cultural significance will be safeguarded for future generations. The designation aligns with Pasadena's broader commitment to preserving its unique architectural and historical character, while also encouraging its continued use as a vibrant community resource.
We respectfully urge the City Council to approve the Elks Lodge's nomination as a local landmark, recognizing its enduring value to Pasadena.
